SUMMARY:April Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Weminuche Audubon members participate in a number of projects whose aim is to promote the conservation and appreciation of birds and wildlife habitat.  Our April 15th meeting will highlight two of these citizen science projects where we focus our efforts in spring and early summer. We invite you to get outdoors and have some fun with us.  \n  Beginning in mid May we will be starting our mornings in the National Forest where we document the types and numbers of birds in designated plots that have undergone different types of treatments for fire prevention.  It is a study whose aim is to answer the question of how bird populations respond to these management practices.  Detailed reports on this Bird Community Monitoring effort  may be found under the Projects tab on our website. This year will mark the eighth season of this study primarily conducted on Jackson Mtn and Fawn Gulch.  Find out at our meeting what we have learned and how you can join a team for this fun study with a time commitment of only three morning hours once per week for six weeks.  There is no better way to start your day than listening to birdsong while you watch for birds.  \n  Our second spring project asks volunteers to relax by a river and record nesting activities of the amazing American dipper. We have been observing nests on the San Juan river in town\, the West Fork and East Fork stretches\, the lower Blanco river and the Piedra river to document nesting success.  This year we plan to add observations related to water quality and food availability to further the understanding of how these birds react to environmental stressors like last fall’s flood.  No special birding skills are required to participate in this study.                                                                                      If gardening interests you\, we can always use help in maintaining our native plant garden in Centennial Park.  You can learn naturalist skills and join the enthusiastic guides of Pagosa Wetland Partners in conducting summer tours of the Riverwalk Wetlands area. DESCRIPTION:LET IT SNOW!!  The in person option for this evening has been cancelled.  Please join us on Zoom at 6:30 using the link below. \nOn Wednesday\, February 18\, to get us excited about the annual Crane Festival in Monte Vista\, Colorado\, we have invited local photographer and member of the Pagosa Springs Photography Club\, Doug Coombs\, to share his beautiful images of sandhill cranes. Coombs is well known to photographers regionally with a portfolio including images from around the world.  His program will include images from national wildlife refuges spanning Bosque del Apache in New Mexico to Monte Vista in the San Luis Valley of Colorado.  Bosque del Apache and nearby Ladd S Gordon wildlife areas in New Mexico are renowned for their opportunities to see and photograph many species of birds and other wildlife\, but Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese in particular. SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Plan to join us on Sunday\, December 14\, for National Audubon’s 126th annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC).  This will mark the 15th year of data contributions from the Pagosa Springs area in the count organized by Weminuche Audubon Society.  Some of our area bird lovers have taken part in all of these local counts.If a major storm cancels the count on the 14th\, we will hold it on December 20. The Christmas Bird Count is the longest running citizen science census of early winter birds in the Western Hemisphere.  The CBC provides critical data on bird populations which is widely used in predicting trends and in protecting species in declines.  Our count follows established protocols for documenting all birds detected within a 15 mile diameter circle\, divided into 8 zones\, which is centered at the transfer station on Trujillo Rd. \nWe encourage participation by bird enthusiasts of all skill levels to join in the fun. Visitors to Pagosa are always welcome to join us.  You may join a team to count birds in one of the designated zones.  If you live within the count circle area\, you can join from home by counting birds at your feeders\, or by welcoming us onto your property to count the birds we see. \nParticipants will tally the results of our count on Wednesday\, December 17\, at the Methodist Church hall on Lewis St.  This will be a potluck dinner\, always a fun time. \nTeams are forming now and we need your help to conduct a successful census.To get involved\, send us an email\, weminucheaudubon@gmail.com

DESCRIPTION:Already November and that means we’re thinking Christmas\, Christmas Bird Count that is\, and hope that you are also.  Recently our lakes have been hosting large numbers of birds\, some returning from northern breeding grounds. To get us in the spirit and ready to identify birds on Count Day\, December 14\, we are once again excited to offer three “Winter Birds 101” classes.The first class\, offered by Keith Bruno on November 19\, will cover waterfowl\, in time to go out and practice our identification skills at local lakes before they freeze over. Come and join the fun when we attempt to remember how to tell those female ducks apart!  The amount of open water on count day always makes a big difference in bird numbers that we report.\nAdditional classes covering songbirds and raptors\, protocols of the count\, and why our numbers matter will be held on December 3 and December 10.  Audience participation is encouraged during these classes.\nClasses will begin promptly at 6:00 PM and end by 8:00 PM.  Come early to share a treat before we get started. The public is invited to join us at the Community United Methodist Church on Lewis St. Please enter through the side door off the parking lot or let us know to open the main door for handicap entry.  In appreciation for our meeting space\, we welcome donations of non-perishable food or cash for the church food bank. These food bank donations are especially vital this year. SUMMARY:Photo Club Presentation on Bosque del Apache
DESCRIPTION:The November meeting of the Pagosa Springs Photography Club will be held on Wednesday\, November 12\, 2025\, at 6:00 p.m.  The Club meets in the Community United Methodist Church at 434 Lewis Street in Pagosa Springs. The program will start at 6:30 p.m.\, but feel free to arrive anytime after 6 p.m. to socialize. Photography Club meetings are open to the public. Please use the side door near the parking lot to enter.\nOur speaker this month will be Club member Doug Coombs. Doug will present a program on Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Bosque del Apache and nearby Ladd S Gordon wildlife areas in New Mexico are renowned for their opportunities to see and photograph many species of birds and other wildlife\, but Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese in particular. These over-wintering species can put on a remarkable show when they lift off from the ponds at\nthe Refuges around sunrise. Doug has traveled to these areas for quite a few years to photograph these amazing sights\, and will share his knowledge of when to visit\, where to photograph\, and other tips; along with many of his outstanding photos from these Refuges.

SUMMARY:October Big Day/Migratory Bird Day
DESCRIPTION:Two fall events that celebrate birds occur this week on Saturday\, October 11\, and you can participate.  October Big Day brings together people who care about birds and contribute to the effort to understand how bird populations are faring worldwide. Every year the number of participants increases. The spring counterpart to this event\, held in May\, was tallied by 1.8 million birders from 204 countries\, showcasing how the love of birds can unite people worldwide.  Adding to this important dataset is easy.  Simply list the bird species and numbers of each that you see in any location and enter your data on ebird.org. You may count for as little as ten minutes anytime between midnight and midnight on the 11th to participate. Count birds at your home or submit a list from your favorite location to watch birds. Every bird counts.  If you are new to ebird\, visit ebird.org to learn how to set up an account \nAlso celebrated on October 11 is World Migratory Bird Day.The theme of this year’s Migratory Bird Days is Shared Spaces. This movement is dedicated to creating bird-friendly cities and communities.  Urban development and other human activities pose survival challenges to birds and other wildlife who share the earth with us. In addition to urging area officials and developers to utilize bird-friendly practices in new planning\, there are simple actions that we can take to protect birds.  Among them are; treating glass to prevent bird strikes\, planting native plants in your home space\, keeping cats indoors\, providing clean water all year\, eliminating pesticide use\, keeping skies dark at night\, and purchasing sustainably grown foods like shade-grown coffee that support birds where they winter.

Are bird strikes at your windows killing or injuring them?  Find out about proven methods you can use to stop these preventable deaths.\nThe conclusions of the 2025 U.S. State of the Birds report\, produced by a partnership of scientific and conservation organizations\, show continued declines in American bird populations.  The National Audubon Society says that “ Key findings from the new report show that more than one-third of U.S. bird species are of high or moderate conservation concern…” Included in this list are birds that share the outdoor spaces where we live.\nCome with your suggestions and questions.  Our goal is to inspire us to take actions that collectively make a difference for birds and other wildlife. SUMMARY:August Camp Out Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The August meeting of the Weminuche Audubon Society will be very special – IT’S a CAMPOUT!  We’ve reserved the Blanco River Group Campground for one night – Wednesday\, August 20th. Bring your camper or tent and you are welcome to spend the night.  We are planning a pot-luck meal with lots of storytelling\, and more. We will have some hot dogs\, so bring a dish to share; your place settings; chairs; binoculars for a birding excursion; and if you have a pop-up canopy\, that might be helpful. You don’t need to stay overnight if you don’t want to – you can just drive on down for the meeting and head home when you are full and refreshed. Come when you can – we’ll plan on eating about 6:00 and festivities will proceed accordingly. \nWe’re working on plans for some good old-fashioned campfire singing too but without the fire!  If you have an appropriate instrument\, bring it along.  What kinds of stories will we tell – bird stories\, of course! If it rains\, we just may dance in it. \nTo find the Blanco River Group Campground\, drive South from Pagosa on Highway 84 for about 10 miles.  Cross the Green Bridge (Green Steel Bridge – can’t miss it).  A few hundred yards after crossing the bridge is a Forest Service Road to your left (east) – that’s the Blanco River Road.  Turn there – the campground is about 2.5 miles in at the end of the road. \nThe public is invited to join us for a relaxing time so bring your friends.  We are a welcoming group of people united by a love of nature. SUMMARY:Four Mile Ranch Trail Days/August 19 and 20
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are needed to help us get our outdoor education site at the beautiful Four Mile Ranch on Snowball Road ready to welcome students in September. These days are open to anyone and everyone interested in assisting. Essentially\, our goals will be to clear brush where needed along trails and in activity areas\, install trail signs\, install a remote toilet and privacy structure\, and unpack activity materials from Keith’s storage unit. Fun fun! As it tends to be warm at that point in August\, my hope would be to start around 8:30 and run till likely 3:30/4 with a break for lunch.
