SUMMARY:June Plant Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun and educational ramble through the forest\, led by certified herbalist Lake McCullough\,  as we identify edible and medicinal native plants. The walks are free of charge! Offered in partnership with the Weminuche Audubon Society. In order to handle increased popularity and demand for information about our local ecosystems\, we will be conducting two back-to-back plant walks at each location. The first tour will begin at 9:30 and run until 11:30. The second tour will begin at 11:45 and go until 1:45.  \nEarly summer herbs\, wildflowers\, and edible plants in the most widespread ecosystem of Pagosa Country! Meet at Turkey Springs Trail System Gate #3\, on Fremont Court. From Highway 160\, take North Pagosa Boulevard north for 5 miles. The road forms a divided\, one-way section. At the point where both sides of North Pagosa Blvd rejoin\, take a sharp left-hand turn\, doubling back on the southbound section of the road for 100 feet before taking the immediate next right at Coronado Circle. Immediately after the intersection\, take the next right on Fremont Court. Please be considerate of private driveways when parking along the road. Walks are about 2 miles roundtrip. Please be prepared for rugged trails and unpredictable weather\, and leave dogs at home. \nThese popular tours book up early and advance registration is required.  There is a 15 person limit on each walk.  To reserve a spot\, call Lake at 970-398-0923.  Be sure to shop in her store\, Earthsense Herbals on Main St\, for natural remedies\, gift items\, handmade jewelry and artwork and so much more. \nAdditional walks will be held in July and August.

SUMMARY:May Chapter Meeting/ Birding by Ear
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever thought about how much the “songscape” adds to our enjoyment of the Pagosa Country landscape? At this month’s Weminuche Audubon Society meeting\,  Keith Bruno\, Southwest Colorado Community Naturalist with Audubon Rockies\, will be hosting a session on “Birding by Ear”.  We’ll explore the varied songs and calls of many familiar local and backyard birds. The purpose of this meeting is to improve everyone’s birding by ear skills\, as well as encourage volunteers to sign up to help with the fifth year of our citizen science project monitoring bird communities in the forests surrounding Pagosa Springs. Please note that our May meeting will be held on Thursday evening instead of our regular Wednesday time.\nOver the past four years\, volunteer observers working with this project have identified more than 80 bird species and counted over 7\,000 birds at four study sites in the ponderosa pine forests around Pagosa Springs. About half of the bird species that we have observed are resident species found year-round in Pagosa Country\, with the other half migrating to our south\, some as far as the southern tip of South America. Moreover\, we’ve also discovered that about 40 of the bird species we’ve observed\, some residents\, but many migrants\, are losing the battle in terms of population numbers. \nThis notable concern makes understanding the linkage between habitat quality and bird community composition — a major focus of our project — even more important. But over and above the conservation goals of our study is the experience project volunteers gain through visiting established monitoring points several times during the six weeks of our sample season\, from late-May to mid-July\, when most of the birds we have studied are building nests and rearing young. In fact\, observing bird species like Warbling Vireos\, House Wrens\, Pygmy Nuthatches\, and Common Nighthawks successfully raise their nestlings is one of the greatest rewards from participation in this citizen science endeavor. \nIf you’d like to participate in our citizen science project this year\, you don’t need to be an\naccomplished birder – helping observers improve their birding skills is a key goal of the project. You can contact us by emailing weminuche.audubon@gmail.com with any questions. \nJoin us on Thursday\, May 18\, at the Community United Methodist Church on Lewis St at 6:00 PM for social time before the meeting starts at 6:30pm. In appreciation for our meeting space\, we welcome donations of non-perishable food for the church food bank.   Use the following link to join us on Zoom \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/82000593178?pwd=N3NXMUs5U2o1SkFlTjlNaXZMSjhsZz09 \nMeeting ID: 820 0059 3178\nPasscode: 711849\nOne tap mobile\n+17193594580\,\,82000593178#\,\,\,\,*711849# US\n+13462487799\,\,82000593178#\,\,\,\,*711849# US (Houston) \nDial by your location\n+1 719 359 4580 US\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 669 444 9171 US\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 205 0468 US\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 309 205 3325 US\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 360 209 5623 US\n+1 386 347 5053 US\n+1 507 473 4847 US\n+1 564 217 2000 US\n+1 646 931 3860 US\n+1 689 278 1000 US\n+1 929 205 6099 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 305 224 1968 US\nMeeting ID: 820 0059 3178\nPasscode: 711849\nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kdMAmI6ZZV

SUMMARY:World Migratory Bird Day
DESCRIPTION:   Members of the Weminuche Audubon Society invite you to join us on Saturday\, May 13 at 8 AM when we celebrate World Migratory Bird Day by seeing what birds we find at Lake Capote Recreation Area\, located just south of Highway 160 on Highway 151. Lake Capote is owned by the Southern Ute Tribe and a $5 entrance fee is charged.  For information email weminuche.audubon@gmail.com \nWorld Migratory Bird Day\, brings to attention the challenges that birds face on their journeys to and from breeding areas and the need for cooperation across the globe.  Habitat needs must be met not only in breeding areas but also in areas where birds spend their winters.   \nThe theme of this year’s Migratory Bird Day is the importance of water in sustaining bird life.  Drought\, development\, pollution and climate change are some of the stressors that impact this critical resource.  This is a call to action to protect this life-sustaining resource.   \n

SUMMARY:Global Big Day
DESCRIPTION:Join bird enthusiasts worldwide on Saturday\, May 13\, in celebrating the birds that share our lives.  Two events mark these yearly celebrations held on the 2nd Saturday of May. Global Bird Day is an online event organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. By participating in Global Big Day\, you can be a member of the world’s largest birding team.  Last year people from 201 countries submitted checklists of the birds they identified on this day.  Between midnight and midnight on May 13\, you can travel to a favorite bird viewing spot or participate from your own backyard.  Spend as little as ten minutes or the whole day keeping track of bird numbers. \nDocumentations including where\, when and how you identified birds\, and the species and numbers of each you observed are entered on ebird.org\, a platform used by millions of birders across the globe.  Here citizen generated data becomes an invaluable tool used by scientists in understanding how birds are reacting to changes in the environment. There’s a place for you in Audubon Rockies’  programs for area youth headed by Southwest Colorado’s Community Naturalist\, Keith Bruno.\nAn exciting learning opportunity shared with Pagosa Wetland Partners members will prepare you to participate in the Riverwalk Naturalist Program and share with locals and tourists the magic of our wetlands along the river in town.\nAnd of course we have citizen science projects for the bird lovers among us.  Learn to survey bird populations and spend some time in the woods watching and listening to birds. We need at least 20 volunteers to commit to our 5th Season Bird Monitoring Project.  Big rewards for a small time donation.  We’ll also be watching American dipper nests and looking to document Pinyon Jay populations\, declining throughout their range. \n   A desire to learn is the primary qualification we look for in volunteers.  We hope that you’ll find your niche in one or more of our volunteer opportunities and help us fulfill our chapter mission of promoting “the conservation and appreciation of birds and wildlife habitat”.\nIn appreciation for our meeting space\, we welcome donations of non-perishable food for the church food bank.  If you are unable to attend but would like to volunteer for one of our projects contact us at weminuche.audubon@gmail.com \nUse the following link to join us on Zoom \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/82000593178?pwd=N3NXMUs5U2o1SkFlTjlNaXZMSjhsZz09 \nMeeting ID: 820 0059 3178\nPasscode: 711849\nOne tap mobile\n+17193594580\,\,82000593178#\,\,\,\,*711849# US\n+13462487799\,\,82000593178#\,\,\,\,*711849# US (Houston) \nDial by your location\n+1 719 359 4580 US\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 669 444 9171 US\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 205 0468 US\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 309 205 3325 US\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 360 209 5623 US\n+1 386 347 5053 US\n+1 507 473 4847 US\n+1 564 217 2000 US\n+1 646 931 3860 US\n+1 689 278 1000 US\n+1 929 205 6099 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 305 224 1968 US\nMeeting ID: 820 0059 3178\nPasscode: 711849\nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kdMAmI6ZZV

SUMMARY:March Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Birds Near and Far At This Month’s Chapter Meeting\n    In March our junior Weminuche Audubon member\, Sage Merrill-Exton\, will get us set for an end to winter weather with a presentation on their family winter trip to Costa Rica. We are looking forward to finding out what they saw in an environment so different than ours.   Next up\, Herb Grover will get us thinking ahead to spring and summer and the 5th season of our Forest Bird Monitoring Project.   All of the proposed and current projects in the forest on Jackson Mountain make the data that we collect on bird populations there especially valuable. Each year\, Herb has collected and evaluated our observations on bird species and numbers and produced both written reports and video summaries.  This year’s report adds a focus on the differences in feeding types\, nesting types and migration patterns within the bird species that we find in the areas that we survey.   If you are new to the project or a returning volunteer\, we hope that you will join us in participating in 2023.  Our survey period overlaps the nesting season from late May to the first week of July.  Volunteers are asked to commit to 1 survey/week (generally 3 hours with travel) and a total of 6 surveys. You can hear what volunteers say about the experience in this short video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEFBj8EjotM&t=11s    Join us at the Community Methodist Church on Lewis St for this meeting on the 15th.  Arrive at 6:00 PM for social time before the meeting starts at 6:30.  In appreciation for our meeting space\, we welcome donations of non perishable items for the church food bank.  \nIf you are unable to join the meeting in person\, use to following link to join us on Zoom \nTopic: March Meeting\nTime: Mar 15\, 2023 06:00 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/85261265029?pwd=eVA1cE0yL0o1L0M2cHRiQTRnWTFuZz09 \nMeeting ID: 852 6126 5029\nPasscode: 864662\nOne tap mobile\n+17193594580\,\,85261265029#\,\,\,\,*864662# US\n+12532158782\,\,85261265029#\,\,\,\,*864662# US (Tacoma) \nDial by your location\n+1 719 359 4580 US\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 669 444 9171 US\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 205 0468 US\n+1 386 347 5053 US\n+1 507 473 4847 US\n+1 564 217 2000 US\n+1 646 931 3860 US\n+1 689 278 1000 US\n+1 929 205 6099 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 305 224 1968 US\n+1 309 205 3325 US\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 360 209 5623 US\nMeeting ID: 852 6126 5029\nPasscode: 864662\nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kbNfrwWPYY

SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Be a part of this global count of birds. Each February\, for four days\, the world comes together for the love of birds. Over these four days people spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them on http://ebird.org  These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations. \nLaunched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society\, the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) was the first online citizen-science project (also referred to as community science) to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real time. Birds Canada joined the project in 2009 to provide an expanded capacity to support participation in Canada. In 2013\, the GBBC became a global project when people began entering data into eBird\, the world’s largest biodiversity-related citizen science (community science) project. \nParticipating in the count is easy.  During the four day count period\, watch birds for as little as 15 minutes wherever you are and record your data on eBird.  If you are new to eBird and the count\, visit http://birdcount.org for detailed information.

SUMMARY:CBC Wrap-Up Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join us this month to share our findings and stories from the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) conducted in Pagosa Springs on December 17. We’ve added the numbers and submitted our results to the National Audubon database.  Our local circle is one of over 2600 counts tabulated in the western hemisphere which track bird populations in winter. It is always fun to get together and see where the birds were in our part of Archuleta County in mid December. \n Regrettably\, we have decided to cancel the in person option for this meeting and will be meeting on Zoom only.  Please use the following link to join us on Zoom. \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://audubon.zoom.us/j/93446468300?pwd=K0p6SjJQbDNRNzlzY25kN0t6UWR1QT09 \nMeeting ID: 934 4646 8300\nPasscode: 384182\nOne tap mobile\n+13462487799\,\,93446468300#\,\,\,\,*384182# US (Houston)\n+16699006833\,\,93446468300#\,\,\,\,*384182# US (San Jose

SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Plan to join us on Saturday\, December 17\, for National Audubon’s 123rd annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC).  This will mark the 12th year of data contributions from the Pagosa Springs area in the count organized by Weminuche Audubon Society.  Some of our area bird lovers have taken part in all of these local counts. If a major storm cancels the count on the 17th\, we will hold it on the 18th.\nThe Christmas Bird Count is the longest running citizen science census of early winter birds in the Western Hemisphere.  The CBC provides critical data on bird populations which is widely used in predicting trends and in protecting species in declines.  Our count follows established protocols for documenting all birds detected within a 15 mile diameter circle\, divided into 8 zones\, which is centered at the transfer station on Trujillo Rd.\nWe encourage participation by bird enthusiasts of all skill levels to join in the fun. Visitors to Pagosa are always welcome to join us.  You may join a team to count birds in one of the designated zones.  If you live within the count circle area\, you can join from home by counting birds at your feeders\, or by welcoming us onto your property to count the birds we see. \nTo avoid conflicting with Holiday festivities organized by the Town of Pagosa on the 17th\, our chili dinner wrap-up party\, where we look at our count results and compare results between areas\, will be held in January.  For more information or to sign up for the count\, email us at weminuche.audubon@gmail.com  Early sign up is encouraged and is a big help to Zone Leaders in dividing areas to be covered.

SUMMARY:October Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join Weminuche Audubon members on Wednesday\, October 19\, when we gather to share our photos and tales of outdoor adventures in the last year.  In the past we have been awed by member photos of birds and other wildlife seen near and far. We know that some of us have taken long-awaited trips to other areas and we look forward to sharing the highlights of these experiences. You don’t have to be a photographer to join in the fun\, stories are just as welcome. \nIf you have photos to share\, please choose around 10 to show.  If you are joining us in person\, bring a flash drive and we will show them on the screen and you can narrate.  Alternatively\, you may email photos to weminuche.audubon@gmail.com and we will transfer them to a flash drive and show them for you.  Please send your photos no later than Monday\, October 17\, to allow time for us to compile them.                                                  \n  Also at this meeting\, Keith Bruno will give an introduction to Audubon’s newly released Bird Migration Explorer. This exciting new tool will allow you to track the migration challenges of individual bird species.  A description of this tool is also available in the Fall Audubon magazine.  \n  We will meet at the Community United Methodist Church on Lewis St.  Join us to socialize at 6:00 PM before the meeting starts at 6:30.  Audubon meetings are open to the public and anyone with an interest is welcome to attend.  In appreciation for our meeting space\, a donation of non-perishable food for the church food bank is requested.  For those unable to attend in person\, use the following Zoom link to join the meeting. \nTopic: WAS Chapter Meeting\nTime: Oct 19\, 2022 06:30 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://audubon.zoom.us/j/96110407473?pwd=ZE5aUW1wQXRsVVJxOFZTUUJrUG8zQT09\n\nMeeting ID: 961 1040 7473\nPasscode: 129168\nOne tap mobile\n+12532158782\,\,96110407473#\,\,\,\,*129168# US (Tacoma)\n+13462487799\,\,96110407473#\,\,\,\,*129168# US (Houston)

SUMMARY:September Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us at our monthly chapter meeting where John Porco will talk about the historic railroad grade that links 2 trains\, 2 cities and 2 states.  Porco serves as Executive Director of the Tracks Across Borders Scenic and Historic Byway (TABB).  He is also an active Weminuche Audubon member and a 20 year volunteer with the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad\, which has given him an intense interest in the history of the railroad and the region served.                  \nThe bi-state TABB travels 128 miles from Chama\, New Mexico to Durango\, Colorado. The Byway traces the historic right of way of the abandoned narrow-gauge Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad\, which was instrumental in the development of the region. The Byway celebrates other tracks as well – the tracks of the wildlife that inhabit the area\, of Native American trails\, of Spanish missionaries in the 1600s\, of oxen on the Old Spanish Trail in the 1800s\, and of the wagons of pioneers\, along with modern highways. TABB is one of 26 designated Byways in Colorado with an equal number in New Mexico\, and was approved by the two states in 2016. Drive this local backcountry Byway to step back in time and see the little-changed western landscape and learn about the deep\, rich history of this part of the old American west. \nWe will meet at the United Community Methodist Church on Lewis St.  Join us to socialize at 6:00 PM before the meeting starts at 6:30.  Audubon meetings are open to the public.  In appreciation for our meeting space\, a donation of non-perishable food for the church food bank is requested.  For those unable to attend in person\, use the following link to join us on Zoom. \nTopic: WAS Chapter Meeting\nTime: Sep 21\, 2022 06:30 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://audubon.zoom.us/j/98210714624?pwd=eHpnNVFNUFltMk9Id0FubTUxU1lBZz09\n\nMeeting ID: 982 1071 4624\nPasscode: 002305\nOne tap mobile\n+13462487799\,\,98210714624#\,\,\,\,*002305# US (Houston)\n+16699006833\,\,98210714624#\,\,\,\,*002305# US (San Jose)
