DESCRIPTION:   Members of the Weminuche Audubon Society invite you to join us on Saturday\, May 13 at 8 AM when we celebrate World Migratory Bird Day by seeing what birds we find at Lake Capote Recreation Area\, located just south of Highway 160 on Highway 151. Lake Capote is owned by the Southern Ute Tribe and a $5 entrance fee is charged.  For information email weminuche.audubon@gmail.com \nWorld Migratory Bird Day\, brings to attention the challenges that birds face on their journeys to and from breeding areas and the need for cooperation across the globe.  Habitat needs must be met not only in breeding areas but also in areas where birds spend their winters.   \nThe theme of this year’s Migratory Bird Day is the importance of water in sustaining bird life.  Drought\, development\, pollution and climate change are some of the stressors that impact this critical resource.  This is a call to action to protect this life-sustaining resource.   \n

DESCRIPTION:Join bird enthusiasts worldwide on Saturday\, May 13\, in celebrating the birds that share our lives.  Two events mark these yearly celebrations held on the 2nd Saturday of May. Global Bird Day is an online event organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. By participating in Global Big Day\, you can be a member of the world’s largest birding team.  Last year people from 201 countries submitted checklists of the birds they identified on this day.  Between midnight and midnight on May 13\, you can travel to a favorite bird viewing spot or participate from your own backyard.  Spend as little as ten minutes or the whole day keeping track of bird numbers. \nDocumentations including where\, when and how you identified birds\, and the species and numbers of each you observed are entered on ebird.org\, a platform used by millions of birders across the globe.  Here citizen generated data becomes an invaluable tool used by scientists in understanding how birds are reacting to changes in the environment. There’s a place for you in Audubon Rockies’  programs for area youth headed by Southwest Colorado’s Community Naturalist\, Keith Bruno.\nAn exciting learning opportunity shared with Pagosa Wetland Partners members will prepare you to participate in the Riverwalk Naturalist Program and share with locals and tourists the magic of our wetlands along the river in town.\nAnd of course we have citizen science projects for the bird lovers among us.  Learn to survey bird populations and spend some time in the woods watching and listening to birds. SUMMARY:March Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Birds Near and Far At This Month’s Chapter Meeting\n    In March our junior Weminuche Audubon member\, Sage Merrill-Exton\, will get us set for an end to winter weather with a presentation on their family winter trip to Costa Rica. We are looking forward to finding out what they saw in an environment so different than ours.   Next up\, Herb Grover will get us thinking ahead to spring and summer and the 5th season of our Forest Bird Monitoring Project.   All of the proposed and current projects in the forest on Jackson Mountain make the data that we collect on bird populations there especially valuable. Each year\, Herb has collected and evaluated our observations on bird species and numbers and produced both written reports and video summaries.  This year’s report adds a focus on the differences in feeding types\, nesting types and migration patterns within the bird species that we find in the areas that we survey.   If you are new to the project or a returning volunteer\, we hope that you will join us in participating in 2023.  Our survey period overlaps the nesting season from late May to the first week of July.  Volunteers are asked to commit to 1 survey/week (generally 3 hours with travel) and a total of 6 surveys. SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Be a part of this global count of birds. Each February\, for four days\, the world comes together for the love of birds. Over these four days people spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them on http://ebird.org  These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations. \nLaunched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society\, the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) was the first online citizen-science project (also referred to as community science) to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real time. Birds Canada joined the project in 2009 to provide an expanded capacity to support participation in Canada. In 2013\, the GBBC became a global project when people began entering data into eBird\, the world’s largest biodiversity-related citizen science (community science) project. \nParticipating in the count is easy.  During the four day count period\, watch birds for as little as 15 minutes wherever you are and record your data on eBird.  If you are new to eBird and the count\, visit http://birdcount.org for detailed information.

SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Plan to join us on Saturday\, December 17\, for National Audubon’s 123rd annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC).  This will mark the 12th year of data contributions from the Pagosa Springs area in the count organized by Weminuche Audubon Society.  Some of our area bird lovers have taken part in all of these local counts.If a major storm cancels the count on the 17th\, we will hold it on the 18th.\nThe Christmas Bird Count is the longest running citizen science census of early winter birds in the Western Hemisphere.  The CBC provides critical data on bird populations which is widely used in predicting trends and in protecting species in declines.  Our count follows established protocols for documenting all birds detected within a 15 mile diameter circle\, divided into 8 zones\, which is centered at the transfer station on Trujillo Rd.\nWe encourage participation by bird enthusiasts of all skill levels to join in the fun. Visitors to Pagosa are always welcome to join us.  You may join a team to count birds in one of the designated zones.  If you live within the count circle area\, you can join from home by counting birds at your feeders\, or by welcoming us onto your property to count the birds we see. \nTo avoid conflicting with Holiday festivities organized by the Town of Pagosa on the 17th\, our chili dinner wrap-up party\, where we look at our count results and compare results between areas\, will be held in January.  For more information or to sign up for the count\, email us at weminuche.audubon@gmail.com  Early sign up is encouraged and is a big help to Zone Leaders in dividing areas to be covered.

SUMMARY:September Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us at our monthly chapter meeting where John Porco will talk about the historic railroad grade that links 2 trains\, 2 cities and 2 states.  Porco serves as Executive Director of the Tracks Across Borders Scenic and Historic Byway (TABB).  He is also an active Weminuche Audubon member and a 20 year volunteer with the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad\, which has given him an intense interest in the history of the railroad and the region served.                  \nThe bi-state TABB travels 128 miles from Chama\, New Mexico to Durango\, Colorado. The Byway traces the historic right of way of the abandoned narrow-gauge Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad\, which was instrumental in the development of the region. The Byway celebrates other tracks as well – the tracks of the wildlife that inhabit the area\, of Native American trails\, of Spanish missionaries in the 1600s\, of oxen on the Old Spanish Trail in the 1800s\, and of the wagons of pioneers\, along with modern highways. TABB is one of 26 designated Byways in Colorado with an equal number in New Mexico\, and was approved by the two states in 2016. These outings are designed to introduce you to the diverse community of birds that spend their summer at Chimney Rock National Monument. Birders of all skill levels are welcome to participate. Your guide will help you identify various species and explain the unique adaptations that allow these birds to survive here. \nParticipants will be walking slowly on uneven terrain in the lower area of CRNM (no archaeological sites are included on this tour). Good walking shoes are advised\, along with plenty of water and sun protection. Bring binoculars if you have them.
