SUMMARY:August Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The August meeting of the Weminuche Audubon Society will take place on Wednesday\, August 17 at the Community United Methodist Church on Lewis St.  We will meet at 6:00 PM to set up and socialize and the meeting will begin at 6:30.   \nThe San Juan River and the conservation wetlands along the riverwalk are community treasures. Take a  tour with the naturalist guides of Pagosa Wetland Partners to explore the life and geology along the popular Riverwalk pathway in town. (See the Preview Calendar in the Pagosa Sun for times and meeting place.)   How can we achieve a balance between protecting these valuable resources and development as the community continues to grow? We invite you to join us in the discussion as we attempt to find an answer to that question.  \nThis month we will explore a part of Pagosa Springs past with Jim Miller. Miller came to Pagosa in 1998 to work as the parks maintenance supervisor for the town of Pagosa Springs.  He describes his job then as being the “parks guy”\, keeping the bathrooms clean and picking up trash. But Pagosa was growing and during his tenure as Parks Superintendent a lot of changes were happening in town.  A new community center and town hall were built\, the riverwalk was extended along the wetlands and foot bridges that connected the 2 sides of the river were put in place. New parks were added in the town. Miller will share some of his experiences from that period. \nAudubon events are open to the public and we invite you to join us.  In appreciation for our meeting place\, we welcome donations of non-perishable food for the church food bank.  \nFor those unable to attend in person\, here’s the Zoom link; \nTopic: WAS Monthly Chapter Meeting\nTime: Aug 17\, 2022 06:30 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://audubon.zoom.us/j/93828433922?pwd=U0xVSDFMQnRWM0JBNiswQnNSbWsvUT09\n\nMeeting ID: 938 2843 3922\nPasscode: 485443\nOne tap mobile\n+13462487799\,\,93828433922#\,\,\,\,*485443# US (Houston)

SUMMARY:July Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:     Audubon members are curious observers of our natural world.  The same habitats that attract birds provide ample opportunities to observe beautiful insects\, flowers\, trees\, mushrooms\, life from the tiny to the immense\, and inspire us to learn about them.  Several of us use cameras as a tool to capture images of what we observe in order to appreciate their beauty and study their habits.                                                                              \nThis month we welcome a presentation on close up and macro photography by Andy Butler\, president of the Pagosa Springs Photography Club.  Butler is a nature and landscape photographer who lives in Pagosa Springs. He has been photographing both small and large subjects since the 1970s.                                                                                     \nHe will give a brief introduction to taking photographs of very small subjects\, with various types of cameras. Included will be pointers on finding subjects and creating pleasing images. The presentation will have an emphasis on approaches to photographing flying insects such as butterflies and dragonflies.  His talk will also include aspects of the biology of these beautiful insects.                                                                                                  \nPlease join us on Wednesday\, July 20\, at the Community Methodist Church on Lewis St. for the Weminuche Audubon Society July chapter meeting with Butler’s fascinating presentation.  We will meet at 6:00 PM to set up and socialize\, with the meeting starting at 6:30.  In appreciation for our meeting space\, donations of non-perishable items for the food pantry are appreciated.                                                                                                           \nAudubon events are open to the public and we look forward to your joining us. SUMMARY:May Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:   At this time of year\, birds are singing their signature songs to advertise their presence\, attract a mate and defend nesting territories.  Identifying bird species by what we hear in addition to by what we see will be the topic of our meeting on Wednesday\, May 18 at 6:30 PM.  We will meet at the Community United Methodist Church on Lewis St.  Socializing and setup will take place beginning at 6:00 PM.         Audubon Rockies Community Naturalist\, Keith Bruno\, will lead us in learning the skills of birding by ear.  His lesson will focus on the songs of birds commonly encountered in our Forest Bird Monitoring citizen science project.  The fourth season of this study\, which documents bird species and numbers in selected areas of the National Forest\, will begin at the end of this month. Recognizing birds by what we hear is a valuable skill set in this study and in our bird survey in the HD mountains\,  and one that improves among our volunteers every year.\nAudubon meetings and activities are open to the public and we welcome your participation. We are seeking volunteers for our bird monitoring projects.  For more information and to add your name to the volunteer list\, email us at weminuche.audubon@gmail.com.                                                                                      In appreciation for our meeting place\, we welcome donations of non-perishable food to the Methodist Church food bank. \nThose unable to join in person may use the following link to join us on Zoom. \nTopic: WAS Chapter Meeting — Birding by Ear \nTime: May 18\, 2022 06:30 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://audubon.zoom.us/j/91656494777?pwd=QlJoQ3VucTVtQURjVklvL0FDQk1jdz09\n\nMeeting ID: 916 5649 4777\nPasscode: 043671\nOne tap mobile\n+13462487799\,\,91656494777#\,\,\,\,*043671# US (Houston)\n+16699006833\,\,91656494777#\,\,\,\,*043671# US (San Jose)

SUMMARY:Global Big Day/Migratory Bird Day
DESCRIPTION:Be a part of birding’s biggest team! Global Big Day is an annual celebration of the birds around you. No matter where you are\, join us virtually on 14 May\, help celebrate World Migratory Bird Day\, and share the birds you find with eBird. \nParticipating is easy—you can even be part of Global Big Day from home. If you can spare 5 or 10 minutes\, report your bird observations to eBird online or with our free eBird Mobile app. If you have more time\, submit several checklists of birds throughout the day. You never know what you might spot. Your observations help us better understand global bird populations through products like these animated abundance maps brought to you by eBird Science. \nLast year\, Global Big Day brought birders together virtually from more countries than ever before. More than 51\,000 people from 192 countries submitted 134\,000 checklists with eBird\, setting four new world records for a single day of birding. Will you help us surpass last year’s records? However you choose to participate\, please always put safety first and follow your local guidelines. \nHow to participate\n\nGet an eBird account: eBird is a worldwide bird checklist program used by millions of birders. It’s what allows us to compile everyone’s sightings into a single massive Global Big Day list—while at the same time collecting the data to help scientists better understand birds. Sign up here. It’s 100% free from start to finish.\nWatch birds on 14 May: It’s that simple. You don’t need to be a bird expert or go out all day long\, even 10 minutes of birding from home counts. Global Big Day runs from midnight to midnight in your local time zone. You can report what you find from anywhere in the world.\nEnter what you see and hear in eBird: You can enter your sightings via our website or download the free eBird Mobile app to make submitting lists even easier. Please enter your checklists before 17 May to be included in our initial results announcement.\n\nWatch the sightings roll in: During the day\, follow along with sightings from more than 170 countries in real-time on our Global Big Day page.\n\neBird Trip Reports on Global Big Day\nNEW this year! eBird Trip Reports are a great way to share where you went and the birds you found on Global Big Day. Simply create an eBird Trip Report for 14 May 2022. As you submit lists and upload media throughout the day\, they’ll be added to your report automatically. Send the trip report link to friends and family so they can follow along. (Learn more about eBird Trip Reports)

SUMMARY:April Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION: We invite you to join us for our April meeting on Wednesday\, April 20\, at the Community United Methodist Church on Lewis St.  We will gather at 6:00 PM to set up and socialize\, with the meeting starting at 6:30.  For those unable to join us in person\, the meeting will be broadcast on Zoom.  Look for the link on our website\, weminucheaudubon.org.\nWe will hear from representatives of 3 exciting citizen science projects organized through the chapter.  Beverly Compton will discuss the importance of surveys being conducted in the HD Mountains in collaboration with San Juan Citizens Alliance.  The area we are covering is accessed by Fossett Gulch Rd and impacted by natural gas wells.   Kitty Neal will provide an overview of The American Dipper Project and our monitoring of nesting success of these amazing birds.  This survey will take you to our beautiful rivers and streams.\nHerb Grover will lead a discussion of the upcoming 4th season of our Forest Bird Monitoring Project\, documenting bird populations in areas of the national forest which have been subjected to different wildfire prevention treatments.  Grover has posted video summaries of this project on youtube\, found by searching Weminuche Audubon Bird Monitoring Project. Information from these surveys contributes to planning for best forest health treatments through our collaboration with Upper San Juan Forest Health Partnership\, Mountain Studies Institute and the US Forest Service.\nThe success of all of these projects depends on volunteer participation and we encourage you to join us in making a contribution to the understanding of impacts to these bird populations.  Expert birding skills are not required\, one of the goals of these studies is to increase our identification expertise by learning from each other.  Each study requires a commitment as little as only three to four hours per week for the duration of the survey.\nWe also have volunteer opportunities in helping to maintain our native plant garden on the Geothermal Greenhouse Partnership site in town and in training to conduct naturalist tours through the wetlands along the Riverwalk.\nAll Audubon events are open to the public. We are a welcoming group and invite you to come and see what we’re all about. A donation of non-perishable food for the church food bank is appreciated.  For information email us at weminucheaudubon@gmail.com.  \nFollowing is the Zoom link for those unable to attend in person. \nTopic: WAS April Chapter Meeting — Community Science Opportunities\nTime: Apr 20\, 2022 06:30 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://audubon.zoom.us/j/96436766163?pwd=Um1pZUczWnNSMWsrRUFJTW9CWUJSUT09\n\nMeeting ID: 964 3676 6163\nPasscode: 425707\nOne tap mobile\n+12532158782\,\,96436766163#\,\,\,\,*425707# US (Tacoma)\n+13462487799\,\,96436766163#\,\,\,\,*425707# US (Houston)
