SUMMARY:March Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an exciting program at our March chapter meeting on Wednesday\, March 16\, at 6:30 PM. This meeting will be held online via Zoom.  Meeting virtually will allow us to hear from our presenter in eastern Colorado who would not be able to join us in person. \nThis month we will explore an important bird habitat located in southeastern Colorado\, John Martin Reservoir. Almost 400 species of resident and migratory birds have been documented spending time at this site on the high desert prairie near the small town of Hasty. Our presenter for the evening will be Dr. Sara Harrod. \nDr. Harrod grew up near San Antonio\, Texas and was introduced to birdwatching by a neighbor while in high school. She attended Texas A&M University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology. She went on to study songbirds while earning a Master of Science in Wildlife Ecology from Texas State University and a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from Arkansas State University. She is now a Natural Resources Specialist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at John Martin Reservoir\, where she leads the Piping Plover and Interior Least Tern monitoring program and conducts public outreach. \nDr. Harrod will be speaking about two of John Martin’s imperiled shorebirds\, the Piping Plover and Interior Least Tern. The presentation will include a brief overview of John Martin Reservoir\, the biology of plovers and terns\, conservation issues these birds face\, what the Army Corps of Engineers and its partners are doing\, and ways people can help protect nesting plovers and terns. \nThe link to join the meeting will be posted here. \nTopic: Weminuche Audubon Society chapter monthly meeting\nTime: Mar 16\, 2022 06:00 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://audubon.zoom.us/j/95265792253?pwd=U0RBbEpjZXU0U1o2TnBONVNaT05CZz09\n\nMeeting ID: 952 6579 2253\nPasscode: 846808\nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,95265792253#\,\,\,\,*846808# US (San Jose)\n+12532158782\,\,95265792253#\,\,\,\,*846808# US (Tacoma)

SUMMARY:February Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The in-person meeting at the Methodist Church has been cancelled due to our unpredictable weather conditions.  We will be meeting on Zoom only.  Herb Grover will start us off with a brief discussion of the importance of cavity nesting birds in maintaining healthy forests.  Which of these did we see in Ponderosa forests within our Bird Monitoring Project?\nDue to predictions for a snowy day\, and the concern that there would not be enough time to construct nestboxes and get home safely\, our nestbox elves (Herb Grover\, Joan Rohwer and Keith Bruno) assembled our nestboxes in advance. For a $10 donation to cover the cost of materials\, the boxes will be yours to take home.  Please let us know if you would like to reserve a box weminuche.audubon@gmail.com Our thanks to Matt Ford of Forest Health Timber Products LLC for a generous donation of lumber. \nCharles Martinez will demonstrate how to make an inexpensive hanging birdfeeder using repurposed plastic soda bottles.  Birds love them.\nUse the following link to join us on Zoom. \nTopic: WAS Chapter Meeting\nTime: Feb 23\, 2022 06:00 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://audubon.zoom.us/j/93957483141?pwd=U01FWEJFcVVqV3lOYUM3S0Rkb0xrdz09\n\nMeeting ID: 939 5748 3141\nPasscode: 985710\nOne tap mobile\n+12532158782\,\,93957483141#\,\,\,\,*985710# US (Tacoma)\n+13462487799\,\,93957483141#\,\,\,\,*985710# US (Houston)

SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:For a quarter of a century the annual Great Backyard Bird Count has been a bright spot for nature lovers. The 25th edition of the event is coming up February 18 through 21. Everyone is invited to join the count so their birds become part of a massive database used by scientists to track changes in bird populations over time. The Great Backyard Bird Count is a joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, National Audubon Society and Birds Canada. \n“Birds tell us how our environment and climate are changing\,” said Chad Wilsey\, chief scientist at the National Audubon Society. “By joining the Great Backyard Bird Count\, participants can contribute valuable data that help scientists better understand our surroundings. Together we can use this information to better protect birds and the places they need.” \nEach participant counts birds for any length of time (but for at least 15 minutes) and reports what they see online. Reports are submitted to https://ebird.org It’s easy for people of all skill levels.\n“Sometimes people feel intimidated about jumping into the world of birds if they have no previous experience\,” said Patrick Nadeau\, president of Birds Canada. “The Great Backyard Bird Count is a wonderful way to get your feet wet\, feel the warmth of the community\, and start to realize the wonders in your own neighborhood. The tools and resources are free. And you are helping birds when you get involved.”Participants enter a new checklist for each new location or time of day during the four-day count. There are also tools and information on the GBBC website to help new and returning birders. You’re also invited to tune in to a special webinar about how to participate in the GBBC. It’s being held February 16 from 2:00 to 3:00 PM Eastern Time. It’s free. Just register to attend the Facebook livestream.

SUMMARY:September Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to attend the Weminuche Audubon Society chapter meeting  on Wednesday\, September 15 at 6:30 PM on Zoom. This month’s talk will be a geologically speculative/fun talk about geology.  Specifically addressed will be the 2 huge volcanoes located close to Pagosa Springs\, both to its north and south sides. Don’t worry\, these volcanoes are no longer active.  \nTo the north\, La Garita’s “Mega-Colossal”  is located all around the Creede Colorado area.  The La Garita explosion\, which occurred around 27 million years ago\, is the world’s largest eruption and “would have killed everything for at least 100 miles in every direction and would have seriously affected everything much further than that” (according to Paul Lipman\, USGS scientist emeritus).    The Wheeler Geologic Area near Creede is located within the La Garita Caldera and is a spectacular place to see\, with weird erosional exposures of rock spires\, and knobs.   \nTo the south of Pagosa Springs\, between Los Alamos and Cuba\, New Mexico\, is the large “Valles Caldera”.  The Valles eruption also exploded a large amount of material which would have covered New Mexico and surrounding states and has been identified as far east as Kansas.  The Valles caldera is dormant\, but not extinct\, and still displays signs of volcanic life with hot springs and boiling sulphuric acid fumaroles.  \nOur presenter for the evening will be Ted Godo\, a part time Pagosa resident and  geological consultant working in the oil and gas industry. Godo originally began his geologic studies at the age of 9 and continued his studies through his master’s degree in Geology from Ohio State University in 1979.  Upon graduation\, Shell recruited him to join their exploration department.  At Shell\, he gradually rose to a position of chief geologist\, where he was responsible to the VP of exploration\, providing advice and ranking of the exploration portfolio in the western hemisphere. \nHe has begun to expand his geologic interests into igneous rocks\, such as  volcanoes\, which is the subject of this talk. He has published articles\, book chapters and books on Mississippian aged turbidites and on chert/novaculite formations in Arkansas; Tertiary turbidite stratigraphic traps in the Gulf of Mexico and most recently\, on the Jurassic Norphlet formation which are ancient sand dune deposits or desert areas. \nFollowing is the link to join the meeting on Zoom.Time: Sep 15\, 2021 06:30 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/89558899565?pwd=clZ2UkVsYStsMlJWUUJzZXpmenFOdz09 \nMeeting ID: 895 5889 9565\nPasscode: 134819\nOne tap mobile\n+13462487799\,\,89558899565#\,\,\,\,*134819# US (Houston)\n+16699006833\,\,89558899565#\,\,\,\,*134819# US (San Jose) \nDial by your location\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 929 436 2866 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\nMeeting ID: 895 5889 9565\nPasscode: 134819\nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/keJF41uhS9 \n

SUMMARY:August Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce a presentation by Deb Callahan\, Board President of The Friends of the San Luis Valley National Wildlife Refuges\, at our August meeting on Wednesday\, August 18 at 6:30 PM.  The Friends of the San Luis Valley National Wildlife Refuges formed in 1999 as an independent nonprofit organization.  \nMany of us make a yearly spring trip to Monte Vista to view the spectacular assemblage of sandhill cranes who stop to fuel up on their northern migration.  The Friends\, along with the Refuge staff\, the Monte Vista Chamber\, Rio Grande County\, and the City of Monte Vista\, plan and operate the annual Monte Vista Crane Festival which brings thousands of visitors from all over the world to the refuges. To date\, the Friends have contributed to the building of the Meadow Lark Trail on the Monte Vista NWR\, the Discovery Room at the Alamosa NWR\, many years of Kid’s Crane Festivals\, and Fishing days (alas\, fish disease and drought has stopped this activity). They also assist the refuge with the yearly Friends and Neighbors Picnic that brings the neighbors of the refuge up to date on the refuge happenings. Friends members worked hard to advocate for the establishment of the Baca NWR in 2005.  In 2021 the Friends received a $15\,000 grant to improve a critical parking area on the Monte Vista Refuge\, wildlife camera installation\, and an educational kiosk.  \n  \n Callahan  received her bachelor’s degree and  master’s in earth sciences from the University of Northern Colorado. Her master’s thesis was funded by the U.S. Geological Survey in Idaho’s Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness.  Later\, she combined her mapping\, spatial abilities\, and computer skills to learn GIS (Geographic Information Systems) working for the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver. She was fortunate to be involved in several projects involving the recovery of endangered species in New Mexico and throughout the west.  She has  now retired in Monte Vista and still loves camping\, hiking\, and skiing in the west. Taught by her parents the importance of public service\, she has served on the boards of the Evergreen Parks and Recreation Board\, The Evergreen Naturalists Audubon Society (10 years of Breeding Bird Surveys)\,  Wild Connections (roadless area mapping and preservation)\, and now the Friends of the San Luis Valley National Wildlife Refuges.\nUse the following link to join the meeting on Zoom.  Please note: If you experience a problem joining the meeting directly with this link\, copy the address and paste it into your browser. \nTopic: August Chapter Meeting\nTime: Aug 18\, 2021 06:30 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/86855961712?pwd=d3VHbEtsaGtxSmlpTTRDUlFXYkpvUT09 \nMeeting ID: 868 5596 1712\nPasscode: 787110\nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,86855961712#\,\,\,\,*787110# US (San Jose)\n+12532158782\,\,86855961712#\,\,\,\,*787110# US (Tacoma) \nDial by your location\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 929 436 2866 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\nMeeting ID: 868 5596 1712\nPasscode: 787110\nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kHswp830K
