SUMMARY:January Meeting- Christmas Bird Count Wrap Up
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Wednesday\, January 19\, at 6:30 PM for our virtual Christmas Bird Count wrap-up where we will find out the tally totals for the day – what was seen and where. Who was seen the most often and who was missing and a couple of birds not reported in previous counts. December 18 turned out to be a beautiful clear\, calm\, day. We are grateful to all of the participants who braved the cold and counted birds. Come prepared to share your experiences  and highlights of the day.  We would love to show your photos to the group.  Please email any photos to fluteplayer@centurytel.net by Monday\, January 17.  We will share them on the screen and you can narrate. \nThis meeting will be broadcast over Zoom.  Use the following link to join the meeting. \nTopic: Weminuche Audubon Society CBC Wrap-up Meeting\nTime: Jan 19\, 2022 06:30 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://audubon.zoom.us/j/96159151538?pwd=SXVEZnd5Q2xSQ2FEY0JldFQrWUthUT09\n\nMeeting ID: 961 5915 1538\nPasscode: 839980\nOne tap mobile\n+13462487799\,\,96159151538#\,\,\,\,*839980# US (Houston)\n+16699006833\,\,96159151538#\,\,\,\,*839980# US (San Jose) \nKeith Bruno has shared 2 interesting sources which document the importance of Christmas Bird Count data in studying the trends in bird populations and its relationship to a warming climate.\nHow Christmas Bird Counts Help Shape Science\nhttps://www.sciencefriday.com/segments/christmas-bird-count-science/\nViewing CBC Data Trends\nhttps://www.audubon.org/conservation/where-have-all-birds-gone

SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \nWeminuche Audubon Society welcomes all local residents\, visitors\, and bird enthusiasts to join the longest running citizen science survey in the world\, the Christmas Bird Count. \nThe Christmas Bird Count is a long-standing program of the National Audubon Society\, with over 100 years of community science involvement. Each year\, thousands of volunteers across the Western Hemisphere come together to participate in this early-winter bird census. The CBC provides critical data on bird population trends\, with viewers logging what they see and hear within a 15-mile diameter count circle. \nWe hope you’ll join in on the effort to log birds and contribute to community science. For more information about the CBC visit https://www.audubon.org/conservation/join-christmas-bird-count \nThe Pagosa Springs count circle is centered at the transfer station on Trujillo Rd and covers areas in town\, south to Burns Canyon\, Timber Ridge\, Alpha\, Pagosa Lakes\, Holiday Acres\, Loma Linda\, Lower Blanco Basin\, Mill Creek Rd\, Log Park\, Cemetery Rd\, Fourmile Rd\, Snowball Rd\, west to Elk Park and areas in between. \nYou may participate by joining a team within one of the eight count circles that divide this area.  If you live within the count area\, you may join by counting birds at your feeders at home. \nFor more information or to sign up for a team\, email Keith Bruno at kbruno@audubon.org \n

SUMMARY:September Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to attend the Weminuche Audubon Society chapter meeting  on Wednesday\, September 15 at 6:30 PM on Zoom. This month’s talk will be a geologically speculative/fun talk about geology.  Specifically addressed will be the 2 huge volcanoes located close to Pagosa Springs\, both to its north and south sides. Don’t worry\, these volcanoes are no longer active.  \nTo the north\, La Garita’s “Mega-Colossal”  is located all around the Creede Colorado area.  The La Garita explosion\, which occurred around 27 million years ago\, is the world’s largest eruption and “would have killed everything for at least 100 miles in every direction and would have seriously affected everything much further than that” (according to Paul Lipman\, USGS scientist emeritus).    The Wheeler Geologic Area near Creede is located within the La Garita Caldera and is a spectacular place to see\, with weird erosional exposures of rock spires\, and knobs.   \nTo the south of Pagosa Springs\, between Los Alamos and Cuba\, New Mexico\, is the large “Valles Caldera”.  The Valles eruption also exploded a large amount of material which would have covered New Mexico and surrounding states and has been identified as far east as Kansas.  The Valles caldera is dormant\, but not extinct\, and still displays signs of volcanic life with hot springs and boiling sulphuric acid fumaroles.  \nOur presenter for the evening will be Ted Godo\, a part time Pagosa resident and  geological consultant working in the oil and gas industry. Godo originally began his geologic studies at the age of 9 and continued his studies through his master’s degree in Geology from Ohio State University in 1979.  Upon graduation\, Shell recruited him to join their exploration department.  At Shell\, he gradually rose to a position of chief geologist\, where he was responsible to the VP of exploration\, providing advice and ranking of the exploration portfolio in the western hemisphere. \nHe has begun to expand his geologic interests into igneous rocks\, such as  volcanoes\, which is the subject of this talk. He has published articles\, book chapters and books on Mississippian aged turbidites and on chert/novaculite formations in Arkansas; Tertiary turbidite stratigraphic traps in the Gulf of Mexico and most recently\, on the Jurassic Norphlet formation which are ancient sand dune deposits or desert areas. \nFollowing is the link to join the meeting on Zoom.Time: Sep 15\, 2021 06:30 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/89558899565?pwd=clZ2UkVsYStsMlJWUUJzZXpmenFOdz09 \nMeeting ID: 895 5889 9565\nPasscode: 134819\nOne tap mobile\n+13462487799\,\,89558899565#\,\,\,\,*134819# US (Houston)\n+16699006833\,\,89558899565#\,\,\,\,*134819# US (San Jose) \nDial by your location\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 929 436 2866 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\nMeeting ID: 895 5889 9565\nPasscode: 134819\nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/keJF41uhS9 \n

SUMMARY:August Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce a presentation by Deb Callahan\, Board President of The Friends of the San Luis Valley National Wildlife Refuges\, at our August meeting on Wednesday\, August 18 at 6:30 PM.  The Friends of the San Luis Valley National Wildlife Refuges formed in 1999 as an independent nonprofit organization.  \nMany of us make a yearly spring trip to Monte Vista to view the spectacular assemblage of sandhill cranes who stop to fuel up on their northern migration.  The Friends\, along with the Refuge staff\, the Monte Vista Chamber\, Rio Grande County\, and the City of Monte Vista\, plan and operate the annual Monte Vista Crane Festival which brings thousands of visitors from all over the world to the refuges. To date\, the Friends have contributed to the building of the Meadow Lark Trail on the Monte Vista NWR\, the Discovery Room at the Alamosa NWR\, many years of Kid’s Crane Festivals\, and Fishing days (alas\, fish disease and drought has stopped this activity). They also assist the refuge with the yearly Friends and Neighbors Picnic that brings the neighbors of the refuge up to date on the refuge happenings. Friends members worked hard to advocate for the establishment of the Baca NWR in 2005.  In 2021 the Friends received a $15\,000 grant to improve a critical parking area on the Monte Vista Refuge\, wildlife camera installation\, and an educational kiosk.  \n  \n Callahan  received her bachelor’s degree and  master’s in earth sciences from the University of Northern Colorado. Her master’s thesis was funded by the U.S. Geological Survey in Idaho’s Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness.  Later\, she combined her mapping\, spatial abilities\, and computer skills to learn GIS (Geographic Information Systems) working for the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver. She was fortunate to be involved in several projects involving the recovery of endangered species in New Mexico and throughout the west.  She has  now retired in Monte Vista and still loves camping\, hiking\, and skiing in the west. Taught by her parents the importance of public service\, she has served on the boards of the Evergreen Parks and Recreation Board\, The Evergreen Naturalists Audubon Society (10 years of Breeding Bird Surveys)\,  Wild Connections (roadless area mapping and preservation)\, and now the Friends of the San Luis Valley National Wildlife Refuges.\nUse the following link to join the meeting on Zoom.  Please note: If you experience a problem joining the meeting directly with this link\, copy the address and paste it into your browser. \nTopic: August Chapter Meeting\nTime: Aug 18\, 2021 06:30 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/86855961712?pwd=d3VHbEtsaGtxSmlpTTRDUlFXYkpvUT09 \nMeeting ID: 868 5596 1712\nPasscode: 787110\nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,86855961712#\,\,\,\,*787110# US (San Jose)\n+12532158782\,\,86855961712#\,\,\,\,*787110# US (Tacoma) \nDial by your location\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 929 436 2866 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\nMeeting ID: 868 5596 1712\nPasscode: 787110\nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kHswp830K

The walks are free of charge!  Call Lake at 264-0884 or stop by her great shop\, Earthsense Herbals at 144 Pagosa St.\, to reserve a spot. \nIn order to handle increased popularity and demand for information about our beautiful local ecosystems\, we will be conducting two back-to-back plant walks at each location. The first tour will begin at 9:30 and run until 11:15. The second tour will begin at 11:30 and go until 1:15. There is a 12-person maximum on each walk. Please call ahead to schedule and indicate which time slot you choose. Walks are about 1.5 miles roundtrip. SUMMARY:July Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Water\, always an important topic in our area\, will be the focus of this month’s meeting\, on Wednesday\, July 21 at 6:30 PM on Zoom. We will learn about the work of the Upper San Juan Watershed Enhancement Partnership\, a local organization working to address the management of this precious resource. Al Pfister\, on behalf of the Upper San Juan Watershed Enhancement Partnership (WEP) will be presenting the results of data collected in Phase II of the WEP’s assessment of the environmental\, recreational\, and agricultural infrastructure needs in the Upper San Juan River. The WEP’s data collection is a part of the implementation of the Colorado Water Plan of 2015 in the development of a Stream Management Plan/Integrated Watershed Management Plan. The WEP’s data collection efforts were done to assess local environmental\, recreational\, and agricultural infrastructure needs in the face of a warming and drying climate. \nPfister is a semi-retired fish and wildlife biologist who has worked in 7 western US states dealing with endangered species issues trying to find a balance between conserving imperiled fish\, wildlife\, plants\, herptiles\, and invertebrates\, while still allowing the various uses (development\, recreation\, grazing\, timber harvest\, energy development\,etc) to coexist.  In addition to his work with WEP\, he serves on the board of the Geothermal Greenhouse Partnership\, and on the board of the San Juan Water Conservancy District.  He is a past board member of the Weminuche Audubon Society.\nAudubon meetings are open to the public.  Use the following link to join the meeting. \nTopic: July Chapter MeetingTime: Jul 21\, 2021 06:30 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)Join Zoom Meetinghttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/81287270778?pwd=K3oyZ3hWcTRkWUpIRDRkUWpMVTU4UT09Meeting ID: 812 8727 0778Passcode: 008685One tap mobile+12532158782\,\,81287270778#\,\,\,\,*008685# US (Tacoma)+13462487799\,\,81287270778#\,\,\,\,*008685# US (Houston)Dial by your location        +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)        +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)        +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)        +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)        +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)        +1 929 436 2866 US (New York)Meeting ID: 812 8727 0778Passcode: 008685Find your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kcn1K0Man7
