SUMMARY:Colorado's Energy Future-making sure wildlife is protected
DESCRIPTION:The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC)\, the state board that approves drilling permits and regulates the oil and gas industry\, is undergoing important changes that will impact Colorado’s wildlife! \nThe COGCC was previously directed to “foster” development of the state’s oil and gas resources and to balance energy development with impacts to public health\, the environment\, and wildlife. Legislation passed last year – SB 19-181 – changed the COGCC’s mission to specify that energy development must be done safely and require that the COGCC protect wildlife from oil and gas impacts when issuing permits. \nBUT the important details of how this will be done is being considered right now and the COGCC needs to hear from people who care about birds and wildlife! \nJoin us for this free\, one-hour webinar – organized by conservation and hunting/angling groups – where you’ll hear from local experts. They will give you the inside scoop on what’s happening and provide guidance on how you can help make a difference. \nThis is a time sensitive important opportunity to ensure a better future for Colorado’s wildlife\, please join us! \nRegister here:  https://bit.ly/2YtbNME

SUMMARY:June chapter meeting via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Our June chapter meeting will be held via Zoom on Thursday\, June 25\, at 5:00 P.M.  We are grateful to have Jordan McMahon give us the presentation that was originally scheduled for March\, when our lives changed in a big way. \nAfter completing his Master of Science degree in biology at Mississippi State University in 2018\, McMahon began work as a wildlife biologist for the Bureau of Land Management in Canon City\, where he is currently employed. At the BLM\, he has focused on implementing a comprehensive monitoring program for bats across the front range in anticipation of white-nose syndrome\, as well as various monitoring projects with other species of concern such as lynx\, Mexican spotted owls\, and other raptor species. White-nose syndrome has decimated many colony-forming bat populations since its arrival on the east coast in the late 2000’s. Unfortunately\, many scientists think that it will spread to Colorado and across the rest of the US\, although it has yet to be detected in our state. Because of this threat\, the BLM’s Royal Gorge Field Office in Canon City\, CO\, has decided to implement a monitoring project to obtain baseline population estimates for bat species in our state\, which will be used to assess future changes in populations and better manage habitats and populations of concern. Included in McMahon’s talk will be details of a study to characterize\nhabitat variables of the Mexican spotted owl\, a species listed as threatened by the USFWS since 1993. \nUse the following link to join the meeting via Zoom.  The application must be added to your device prior to joining. \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://audubon.zoom.us/j/99781480229?pwd=MlNwdkxCVEZIdkF5dmRrM1dhaUJaQT09\n\nMeeting ID: 997 8148 0229\nPassword: 321923\n\nOne tap mobile\n1-346-2487799\nMeeting ID: 99781480229#\nPassword: 321923# US

SUMMARY:Western Water Webinar
DESCRIPTION:As a headwater state\, Colorado’s water is some of the most sought after and hardest working in the West. Colorado’s rivers provide a lifeline for birds\, other wildlife\, agriculture\, communities\, and economies\, both in and downstream of Colorado. \nA persistent drought\, overuse\, and climate change have pushed states to reach for new water solutions\, right now. There is a lot at stake for people and the environment. The more we understand how Colorado’s water and the Colorado River is managed\, the better decisions we’ll make\, together. \n2020 will be a landmark year for Colorado water management. Join Abby Burk\, western rivers regional program manager for Audubon Rockies\, for an entertaining and conversational primer on Colorado water and the “Law of the River.” \n\n\n\n\n\n Why Everyone is Talking “Water” in Colorado\n\nClick on the link to register for the webinar.

SUMMARY:An evening with the Unique Wetland Plants of the San Juan
DESCRIPTION:Conversation on Carex: An Evening with the Unique Wetland Plants of the San Juan \n\nCome learn about the biology and ecology of the sedges (Carex sp.) found in the San Juan Mountains. This talk will be comprised of two parts. The first an overview and introduction to the basics of Carex biology and identification and the second a focus on the ecology of Carex as it relates to the high elevation wetlands of the southwest Colorado. This talk will be led by Anthony Culpepper with Mountain Studies Institute. For the past 8 years\, Anthony has managed several of MSI’s alpine wetland and fen mitigation projects. His time spent knee deep in fens have given him a deep appreciation of the complexity and diversity of sedges found in our backyard. \nView this presentation on Zoom \nhttps://zoom.us/j/3666195404?pwd=QmNHVHBJV001NUdadHpKQkwvTXFiZz09 \nMeeting ID: 366 619 5404 \nPassword: Sedges

In this webinar\, you will hear from Audubon’s local experts about the birds of Great Salt Lake\, with a particular focus on Audubon’s Gillmor Sanctuary\, how its habitats are dynamic and how different species of birds are reacting to seasonal and long-term changes in water management and availability. You will also get an overview of the ongoing research at Gillmor Sanctuary\, looking into the macroinvertebrate food sources that its migratory and nesting birds rely on.

SUMMARY:Western Water Webinars
DESCRIPTION:An Overview of the Colorado River for Birds and People with Audubon’s Jennifer Pit \nClick on the link to register for this webinar. \nRiverside habitats like the forests and wetlands that line the Colorado River support some of the most abundant and diverse bird communities in the arid West\, serving as home to some 400 species. The Colorado also provides drinking water for more than 36 million people\, irrigates 5.5 million acres of farms and ranches\, and supports 16 million jobs throughout seven states (and Northwest Mexico)\, with a combined annual economic impact of $1.4 trillion. With drought\, diversions\, and climate change threatening the river\, Audubon’s Colorado River Program Director Jennifer Pitt will tell us about Audubon’s work\, and future opportunities to protect the river for birds and people.

SUMMARY:March Chapter Meeting-Cancellation Notice
DESCRIPTION:Our March meeting has been cancelled.  Please check back for updates on future events. \nThis month’s meeting will feature a presentation by Jordan McMahon on studies of bat and Mexican spotted owl populations.  After completing his Master of Science degree in biology at Mississippi State University in 2018\, Jordan began work as a wildlife biologist for the Bureau of Land Management in Canon City\, where he is currently employed.  At the BLM\, he has focused on implementing a comprehensive monitoring program for bats across the front range in anticipation of white-nose syndrome\, as well as various monitoring projects with other species of concern such as lynx\, Mexican spotted owls\, and other raptor species. \nWhite-nose syndrome has decimated many colony-forming bat populations since its arrival on the east coast in the late 2000’s.  Unfortunately\, many scientists think that it will spread to Colorado and across the rest of the US\, although it has yet to be detected in our state.  Because of this threat\, The BLM’s Royal Gorge Field Office in Canon City\, CO\, has decided to implement a monitoring project to obtain baseline population estimates for bat species in our state\, which will be used to assess future changes in populations and better manage habitats and populations of concern\, \nIncluded in McMahon’s talk will be details of a study to characterize habitat variables of the Mexican spotted owl\, a species listed as threatened by the USFWS since. 1993. \nWeminuche Audubon will be participating in two citizen science monitoring projects this summer.  We will be continuing our monitoring project of forest bird populations in areas treated for fire mitigation\, and joining in the expansion of a study of American dipper nesting. \nAudubon meetings are free and open to the public.  In appreciation for our meeting space\, we ask that you bring a donation of nonperishable food for the Methodist Church food bank.
