SUMMARY:April Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:In April we will be discussing our Bird Community Monitoring Project as we get ready for the third season of this study. Join us on Zoom to learn about the importance of this fun citizen science project. \nControlled burns\, thinning of tree stands and removal of the brush layer are some of the methods employed by the USFS to protect our forests and our homes from the devastation of wildfire.  Changes that people make to the forest structure affect the plants and animals that are adapted to live in these ecosystems\, leading members of the local Audubon chapter to wonder how bird populations responded to these manipulations. \nUnder the direction of chapter vice-president\, Herb Grover\, Weminuche Audubon designed a citizen science project in 2019. This project addresses the question; “What are the effects\, if any\, that forest thinning treatments or prescribed fire have on bird community composition and structure?”  With input from our partners in the project\, The San Juan Forest Health Partnership\, Mountain Studies Institute\, and the United States Forest Service\,  3 similar areas of Ponderosa Pine forest were chosen as survey plots.  The differences between them were in the type of fire prevention treatment which had been employed.  The plot on Turkey Springs has been subjected to controlled burns\, the one on Fawn Gulch to mastication of the brush layer and the one on Jackson Mountain to no treatment in recent time. \nVolunteer participants in the study went out in teams to survey pre-assigned points and count all the birds identified by sight or sound in 6 minutes at each point.  2020 was the second year of our study and we all had fun learning from each other and becoming better at bird identification. \nGrover will talk about the findings of the first 2 seasons of our study.  He has been a professor of biology\, ecology and environmental science classes for over 2 decades and continues to teach online classes for Wayland Baptist University. A man of many talents\, he has produced videos explaining the project which may be viewed on youtube by searching Grover Bird Community Monitoring.  He has also written two reports which may be read on our website under the Projects tab\, Bird Community Monitoring.  The chapter is indebted to him for the time and energy that he has put into this project. \nWe are seeking volunteers for the 2021 season which extends from late May into early July.  For a  time commitment of only 15 hours or less\, you can advance the goals of this study and join our dedicated group of participants. DESCRIPTION:Stretching across 13 western states and 2 Canadian provinces\, the sagebrush steppe is North America’s largest ecosystem. Sadly\, most Americans know little about this biologically rich landscape and the wonders found there. \nThis free virtual workshop is an opportunity for chapter leaders (classroom and informational educators) and community members who lead virtual or in-person outreach efforts to learn about lesson plans\, resources\, and activities that Audubon Rockies’ award-winning educators have created for the sagebrush ecosystem. \nIn this 2-hour webinar\, learn how these free resources can be incorporated into classrooms\, museums\, field trips\, camps\, and more. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our monthly meeting on Wednesday\, March 17\, at 6:30 PM. In March we welcome Douglas Purcell\, district wildlife manager with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. CPW is charged with managing 42 state parks\, over 300 state wildlife areas\, and all of the state’s wildlife. SUMMARY:February Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, February 17\, at 6:30 PM for our monthly chapter meeting.  The topic of our meeting this month will be The American Dipper Project.  Who doesn’t love these incredible birds! \nOur presenter for the evening will be Stephen Munroe\, chapter member from Durango\, who leads a study of the nesting success of these amazing birds on the Animas River.  Monroe is a HydroEcologist who lives in Durango and has been studying springs\, streams\, and rivers in the Four Corners region for more than twenty five years. \nThe American Dipper Project began in 2016\, due to the concerns of a group of birdwatchers in Durango about the potential impacts of the 2015 Gold King Mine spill in the Animas River on the American Dipper population. The project’s objective is to study the breeding success of American Dippers (Cinclus mexicanus) on the Animas River and other streams in southwestern Colorado. Each year from 2016 through 2020\, citizen science volunteers have surveyed Dippers learning about nesting behavior and success\, nest site fidelity\, and the bird’s unique personalities. In June 2018\, a catastrophic wildfire burned portions of the Animas watershed\, and subsequent flooding introduced large volumes of sediment to the river\, adding another negative impact to American Dipper’s habitat and food sources. \nThis year\, with Munroe’s guidance\, we hope to be able to extend these studies to the San Juan river and tributaries in the Pagosa area. SUMMARY:Great Backyard Birdcount
DESCRIPTION:Each February\, for four days\, the world comes together for the love of birds. Over these four days we invite people to spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them to us. These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations.  This project is a joint effort between National Audubon Society\, Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Birds Canada. \nThis year’s count takes place starting at midnight on February 12 and goes until midnight of February 15.  Count birds for a minimum of 15 minutes in your yard or at your favorite location and enter your sightings on ebird.org.  If you are new to ebird and/or the count\, visit  http://birdcount.org for more information.

SUMMARY:Audubon's Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:We are planning for a safe and fun count of our winter birds on Saturday\, December 19.  If the weather doesn’t cooperate on Saturday\, we will move the count to Sunday\, December 20.\nVolunteers will count and record all of the birds that we see within one of eight zones in the Pagosa Springs count circle.  The 15 mile diameter circle is centered on Trujillo Rd near downtown Pagosa Springs.\nIf you live within the count circle and prefer to participate by counting birds at your feeders\, you can do so from the comfort of your home.  We will provide forms and instructions for adding your feeder count to our data.\nFollowing protocols of the National Audubon Society and the State of Colorado\, we will not be car-pooling as we have done in the past.  All in-person gatherings will be done outside with masks and social distancing.  Some years we have worn masks anyway just to keep our faces warm!  Zone leaders will do advance scouting to designate rendezvous points good for spotting birds.\nWe need your help to make the count a success.  Please take the time to let us know that you will participate by sending us an email.weminuche.audubon@gmail.com
