SUMMARY:October Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:At this month’s online meeting\, on Wednesday\, October 21 at 6:30 PM\, the Weminuche Audubon chapter will host a presentation on Adaptive Silviculture For Climate Change\, an experimental project designed to determine best forest management practices in the face of a warming climate and increased fire danger.  One of these trials is being conducted here on Jackson Mountain. \n Our presenters are Matthew Tuten and Dana Hayward.  Tuten is a silviculturist and a timber program manager for the Pagosa and Columbine Ranger Districts of the San Juan National Forest (Wolf Creek Pass to just east of Durango). He’s been with the San Juan National Forest for just over 5 years. Prior to moving to Pagosa Springs with his wife and two children\, he was a Forester on the Ouray Ranger District of the Grand Mesa\, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests in Montrose\, Colorado\, where he worked in mixed-conifer forests\, similar in many ways to the forests on Jackson Mountain. Before working for the Forest Service\, he contributed to forest restoration research at Northern Arizona University and also completed a graduate thesis on management guidelines for the Northern Goshawk in southwestern National Forests.  He’s literally been working in the woods in some form or fashion since he was 15.  \n Hayward is the Partnership Coordinator for Mountain Studies Institute and San Juan Forest Health Partnership\, two area organizations working to protect our forests.  By bringing diverse stakeholders together\, the group works to identify and prioritize forest health projects that protect our community while improving forest health and ecosystem function. A native Coloradan\, Hayward has lived in Pagosa Springs since 2013. In her position as Partnership Coordinator at the Mountain Studies Institute\, she serves as the San Juan Headwaters Forest Health Partnership coordinator and supports coordination activities for other collaborative groups in Southwest Colorado and Northern New Mexico. She loves the work she does to support collaborative processes that impact natural resource and landscape management; the committed partners she gets to work with are who truly make her job awesome. A background in education\, agriculture\, and marketing lend unique perspectives to her work\, while her facilitation\, project management\, and communication skills support the work of MSI and its partners. Dana holds an M.Agr. in Agricultural Resource Management\, and an M.Ed. in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education. \nFor the past two summers\, members of the local Weminuche Audubon Chapter have conducted a citizen science survey designed to determine the effects of different fire prevention treatments on bird populations.  These surveys have taken place in ponderosa pine areas of the National Forest at locations on Turkey Springs\, Fawn Gulch and Jackson Mountain and complement the studies of the Adaptive Silviculture trials. \n All interested parties are invited to join us in what promises to be an informative evening. \nUse to following Zoom link to join the meeting:\nJean Zirnhelt is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. \nTopic: Weminuche Audubon October meeting\nTime: Oct 21\, 2020 06:30 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://zoom.us/j/95968921606?pwd=WGlKY1lteGQ3bzF5bGYvWWRXMWlCUT09 \nMeeting ID: 959 6892 1606\nPasscode: 642665\nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,95968921606#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,642665# US (San Jose)\n+12532158782\,\,95968921606#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,642665# US (Tacoma) \nDial by your location\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 929 436 2866 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\nMeeting ID: 959 6892 1606\nPasscode: 642665\nFind your local number: https://zoom.us/u/aent3SiPZq

SUMMARY:California Condor Release
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually for the 25th annual public California Condor release! \n\n\n\n\n\nEvery year thousands of people gather at Vermilion Cliffs National Monument to watch one of conservation’s biggest spectacles – the release of captive-bred California Condors to the wild. This day is a celebration of the dedication and tenacity that hundreds of people have put into bringing the iconic California Condor back from the brink of extinction. In the 1980’s\, there were only 22 individual birds left on the planet\, yet today they stand at nearly 500. This year\, with Covid-19 affecting our ability to gather in large groups\, we will not be able to hold an in-person public release at the Vermilion Cliffs\, but the celebration will go on! \nThe Peregrine Fund will release up to four California Condors atop the spectacular ledges of Vermilion Cliffs National Monument in northern Arizona at 11am MST (12pm MDT) Saturday\, Sept. 26. Since the public is unable to watch from the annual viewing site\, we are excited to offer the opportunity to observe the release virtually on The Peregrine Fund’s YouTube Channel. \nWatch as young condors unfold their wings and take to the skies of northern Arizona for the first time in their lives. Because the biologists are unable to schedule exactly when the birds will choose to leave their release pen\, the event will have a picture-in-picture set up with a camera trained on the release pen\, and will include videos and interviews with the condor biologists and conservationists who work with these massive birds! Viewers will also be able to chat with and ask questions to the condor biologists who are on the cliff\, behind a blind\, waiting for the birds to take off. \nFor further information visit: \nhttps://peregrinefund.org/event/public-california-condor-virtual-release-sep26

SUMMARY:Weminuche Audubon Society September Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Weminuche Audubon Society on Wednesday\, September 16 at 6:30 PM for our monthly chapter meeting.  This remote meeting will take place on Zoom.  If you are new to Zoom\, you will need to go to http://Zoom.us  prior to the meeting and download the free Zoom for client app to your personal device.  Use the meeting link at the bottom of this page to join the meeting. All interested parties are welcome. \nThe topic of this month’s meeting will be the importance of wetlands\, particularly those in our Pagosa Springs area.  80% of all wildlife species use wetlands or riparian habitats at some point in their life cycle.  According to the EPA\, “more than half of our original wetlands have been drained and converted to other uses”.  Geothermal sources in Pagosa Springs have created unique\, warm water wetlands and contribute to the rich diversity of birds we see along the riverwalk in town. \nOur presenter for the evening will be Randy McCormick.  Prior to moving to Pagosa Springs\, McCormick served as environmental manager at the National Estuarine Research Reserve in Naples\, Florida\, mandated to protect 110\,000 acres of coastal wetlands in the western Everglades.  He is a board member of the Weminuche Audubon Society and an active member in Pagosa Wetland Partners\, a group of citizens committed to preserving important area wetlands habitats. Find out how you can be involved in this mission. \nJean Zirnhelt is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. \nTopic: Weminuche Audubon Sept meeting\nTime: Sep 16\, 2020 06:30 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://zoom.us/j/99021266723?pwd=RDlKZlltRUdWYzBPYUJoN1pPNlpCdz09 \nMeeting ID: 990 2126 6723\nPasscode: 537123\nOne tap mobile\n+13462487799\,\,99021266723#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,537123# US (Houston)\n+16699006833\,\,99021266723#\,\,\,\,\,\,0#\,\,537123# US (San Jose) \nDial by your location\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 929 436 2866 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\nMeeting ID: 990 2126 6723\nPasscode: 537123\nFind your local number: https://zoom.us/u/aclX7ZY703 \n

SUMMARY:Annual Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We will be holding our annual meeting and elections virtually this year on Wednesday\, August 19\, at 6:00 PM.  This meeting\, which is traditionally held in June\, was postponed in hopes that we could meet in person.  But concerns for the health and safety of all of us have forced the decision to hold it via Zoom.  Normally we have all shared a potluck dinner\, so feel free to sit back and bring your meal to the meeting.  This meeting will feature a recap of events in the last year and a report on our finances.  Despite current restrictions\, we have been and continue to be a busy group.\nHerb Grover will present preliminary findings from our bird monitoring project conducted in May\, June and July.  It will be exciting to find out similarities to and differences from last year’s study. We are investigating ways to share photos from the study on our website.\nAlso at this meeting we will conduct elections to the Board of Directors and officer positions. Board members are elected to a 2 year term. Your current board is comprised of Brenda Breding (secretary)\, Anne Stevens (treasurer)\, Becky Herman (past president)\, Herb Grover (vice-president)\, Jean Zirnhelt (president) and Keith Bruno\, Loyette Stewart and Suzanne Coe as directors.\nOfficer positions up for election this year are President and Vice-President (sound familiar?). Directors up for re-election are Keith Bruno\, Loyette Stevens\, and Becky Herman. A paid chapter membership is required to vote and we have extended the payment deadline to August 31 this year( if you paid last year we will consider your membership current for voting purposes).\nOur bylaws allow us to have up to 3 more director positions on our board.  If you are interested in joining us\, please let us know at weminuche.audubon@gmail.com\nIt’s easy to participate in a Zoom meeting. Let us see your faces and hear your voices.  Directions and a sign-in link will be sent out prior to the meeting.

SUMMARY:Pagosa Wetland Partners Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at Yamaguchi park to discuss our efforts to protect area wetlands.  Bring a chair and water.  We will meet\, socially distanced\, outside at the gazebo near the river.  If you are interested in touring the vacant land known as Yamaguchi south\, slated for development by the town\, bring binoculars and we will look for birds after the meeting. \n“We are volunteers with a citizen-led advocacy group we named the Pagosa Wetland Partners.  We are associated with the National Audubon local chapter Weminuche Audubon in Archuleta County.   \n\nWe formed as a group a year ago in response to public presentations on a potential residential development along the San Juan River in downtown Pagosa Springs within the 15 remaining acres of The Springs Resort. This property is directly adjacent to a riparian wetland ecosystem with unique native plants and flowing water habitat that is utilized by 155 bird species (last count 2019) and companion animal communities. This wetland has a highly unusual feature of warm spring water inflow creating marsh and ponds that stay open all winter. It is an important refuge for migrating and overwintering birds.  This entire system is within and connected to the Upper San Juan River and its riparian corridor.\n \nAs mentioned\, our advocacy for the protection of the wetlands is in response to the potential for  high density residential development bordering this wetland.  Our intent is not to be confrontational\, but rather to assist the community by utilizing the best available science to produce the best possible outcomes. Land use development codes are not always sufficient to prevent problems.  We feel it is important to address potential impacts to the wetlands as well as to the complex hydrology of this section of the San Juan River.  After observations by a retired hydrologist in our group\, questions about the quantity\, quality\, and timing of spring water outflows led us to be concerned about impacts.  This unique riparian zone is also highly valued by the community for recreation\, education\, ecotourism\, birding\, and the central role it plays in the quality of life enjoyed by citizens and visitors alike. We are also aware that when it comes to avoiding\, or mitigating\, environmental impacts from inappropriate land uses\, an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of remediation.”

SUMMARY:Hometown Habitat Online Movie
DESCRIPTION:We will wrap up the week with a free online movie on Thursday evening from 7-9 PM. You won’t want to miss Hometown Habitat produced by the Meadow Project. https://themeadowproject.com/hometown-habitat/ \nHometown Habitat features renowned entomologist Dr. Douglas Tallamy\, whose research\, books and lectures on the use of non-native plants in landscaping\, sound the alarm about habitat and species loss. Tallamy provides the narrative thread that challenges the notion that humans are here and nature is someplace else. “It doesn’t have to\, and shouldn’t be that way.” Inspiring stories of community commitment to conservation landscaping illustrate Tallamy’s vision by showing how humans and nature can co-exist with mutual benefits. \nThe message: All of us have the power to support habitat for wildlife and bring natural beauty to our patch of the earth. \nThe goal: Build a new army of habitat heroes! \nUse the following link to register for the movie \nhttps://audubon.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIlcOupqzsjE9cTd8Kxli6gya3JGgKL5J6y

SUMMARY:Colorado's Energy Future-making sure wildlife is protected
DESCRIPTION:The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC)\, the state board that approves drilling permits and regulates the oil and gas industry\, is undergoing important changes that will impact Colorado’s wildlife! \nThe COGCC was previously directed to “foster” development of the state’s oil and gas resources and to balance energy development with impacts to public health\, the environment\, and wildlife. Legislation passed last year – SB 19-181 – changed the COGCC’s mission to specify that energy development must be done safely and require that the COGCC protect wildlife from oil and gas impacts when issuing permits. \nBUT the important details of how this will be done is being considered right now and the COGCC needs to hear from people who care about birds and wildlife! \nJoin us for this free\, one-hour webinar – organized by conservation and hunting/angling groups – where you’ll hear from local experts. They will give you the inside scoop on what’s happening and provide guidance on how you can help make a difference. \nThis is a time sensitive important opportunity to ensure a better future for Colorado’s wildlife\, please join us! \nRegister here:  https://bit.ly/2YtbNME

SUMMARY:June chapter meeting via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Our June chapter meeting will be held via Zoom on Thursday\, June 25\, at 5:00 P.M.  We are grateful to have Jordan McMahon give us the presentation that was originally scheduled for March\, when our lives changed in a big way. \nAfter completing his Master of Science degree in biology at Mississippi State University in 2018\, McMahon began work as a wildlife biologist for the Bureau of Land Management in Canon City\, where he is currently employed. At the BLM\, he has focused on implementing a comprehensive monitoring program for bats across the front range in anticipation of white-nose syndrome\, as well as various monitoring projects with other species of concern such as lynx\, Mexican spotted owls\, and other raptor species. White-nose syndrome has decimated many colony-forming bat populations since its arrival on the east coast in the late 2000’s. Unfortunately\, many scientists think that it will spread to Colorado and across the rest of the US\, although it has yet to be detected in our state. Because of this threat\, the BLM’s Royal Gorge Field Office in Canon City\, CO\, has decided to implement a monitoring project to obtain baseline population estimates for bat species in our state\, which will be used to assess future changes in populations and better manage habitats and populations of concern. Included in McMahon’s talk will be details of a study to characterize\nhabitat variables of the Mexican spotted owl\, a species listed as threatened by the USFWS since 1993. \nUse the following link to join the meeting via Zoom.  The application must be added to your device prior to joining. \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://audubon.zoom.us/j/99781480229?pwd=MlNwdkxCVEZIdkF5dmRrM1dhaUJaQT09\n\nMeeting ID: 997 8148 0229\nPassword: 321923\n\nOne tap mobile\n1-346-2487799\nMeeting ID: 99781480229#\nPassword: 321923# US
