SUMMARY:June 2025 Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our June meeting is a potluck dinner\, always a fun time with great food.  Please bring a dish to share.  As dictated by our bylaws\, at this meeting we will review our accomplishments of the past fiscal year\, affirm our goals\, review our finances and conduct elections to the Board of Directors. Two Board positions are up for election this year\, that of Secretary and of Treasurer.  The Board is recommending that Lisa Tedder be elected for another term as Secretary and Anne Stevens as Treasurer. Both these women currently do a fantastic job for our chapter in these roles. There is also space on the Board for an additional director.  Terms are two years.  If you are interested in serving on the Board or have questions about it\, please let us know weminuche.audubon@gmail.com  Nominations from the floor for all of these positions will also be taken.\nThis is the time to renew your membership for the next fiscal year\, July 2025 through June 2026\, if you have not already done so. Yearly dues remain at $15.  We will be collecting dues and selling our chapter tee-shirts prior to the meeting.  Shirts are priced at $22.00.  We are able to accept cash or checks.\nPlease arrive between 5:30 and 5:45 this month so that we can start the meal at 6:00 PM. SUMMARY:June Plant Walk with Lake McCullough
DESCRIPTION:With our spring snow and rains\, forests are coming alive with a diverse array of plants. Plants that provide food or medicine and incredible beauty\, and some to admire only from a distance. Join us for a fun and educational ramble through the forest\, as we discover edible and medicinal native plants. The walks are free of charge! \nWeminuche Audubon Society and Audubon Rockies are excited to sponsor three summer plant walks with certified herbalist\, Lake McCullough.  The first walk on Monday\, June 9\,  will explore early summer herbs\, wildflowers and medicinal plants in the Ponderosa Pine Ecozone in the Turkey Springs area. \nIn order to handle increased popularity and demand for information about our local ecosystems\, we will be conducting two back-to-back plant walks at this location. The first tour will begin at 9:30 and run until 11:30. The second tour will begin at 11:45 and go until 1:45. There is a 15-person maximum on each walk. Please call McCullough ahead to reserve a space at 970-398-0923 and indicate which time slot you choose. This walk is about 1.5 miles roundtrip. Please be prepared for rugged trails and unpredictable weather\, and leave dogs at home. \nWe will meet on Turkey Springs Road. From Highway 160\, take Piedra Road (CR 600) 6.3 miles north to Turkey Springs Road (Forest Service Road 629). Turn left onto Turkey Springs Road and continue 4.5 miles\, keeping straight at the Brockover Road (FS 919) intersection. Continue another .1 mile. Parking is along the side of the road.  \n McCullough’s knowledge and fun sense of humor have made these walks very popular and spaces fill quickly. DESCRIPTION:In the last couple of weeks\, many of our summer songbirds have returned to brighten our lives with their colorful plumage and cheerful songs. Western tanagers\, black-headed grosbeaks\, house wrens\, yellow warblers\,  yellow-rumped warblers and others\, all announcing ‘I am here’. It’s time to renew our training in matching birds with their songs and calls.\nBirding by ear to identify bird species is an important skill used by volunteers in our Forest Bird Monitoring Project\, set to start soon. SUMMARY:Global Big Day/World Migratory Bird Day
DESCRIPTION:Two annual events that celebrate birds occur this year on Saturday\, May 10\, and you can participate.  Global Big Day brings together people who care about birds and contribute to the effort to understand how bird populations are faring worldwide. Every year the number of participants increases. Last year a new world record was set when more than 63\,000 people entered checklists of the birds they saw on Global Big Day.  \nAdding to this important dataset is easy.  Simply list the bird species and numbers of each that you see in any location and enter your data on ebird.org. You may count for as little as ten minutes anytime between midnight and midnight on the 10th to participate. Count birds at your home or submit a list from your favorite location to watch birds. Every bird counts.  If you are new to ebird\, visit ebird.org to learn how to set up an account.  \nAlso occurring on Saturday the 10th is World Migratory Bird Day. The goal of this global effort is to raise the awareness of migratory birds and the need for international cooperation to conserve them.  Migratory birds rely on good habitat at their winter homes\, along the paths of their spring and fall journeys\, and in their summer breeding areas to survive.  They may travel through several countries each year. \nThe theme of this year’s Migratory Bird Day is Shared Spaces. The day is dedicated to creating bird friendly cities and communities.  Urban development and other human activities pose survival challenges to birds and other wildlife who share the earth with us. In addition to urging area officials and developers to utilize bird-friendly practices in new planning\, there are simple actions that you can take to protect birds.  Among them are; treating glass to prevent bird strikes\, planting native plants in your home space\, keeping cats indoors\, providing clean water\, eliminating pesticide use\, and keeping skies dark at night.  \nMigratory birds like western tanagers\, black-headed grosbeaks\, broad-tailed and black-throated hummingbirds\, chipping sparrows\, green-tailed towhees\, Virginia’s warblers and others are arriving now to spend the summer in our area.  You can take action to ensure that they find a refuge in your shared space.

SUMMARY:Upper San Juan River Risk Assessment
DESCRIPTION:This winter’s precipitation in Archuleta County and our surrounding mountains has been below average. The water levels of both Lake Powell and Lake Mead are at about 35 percent. What does this mean for our San Juan River? On Tuesday evening\, March 25\, the Southwestern Water Conservation District and Wright Water Engineers will present the results of risk studies undertaken to answer that question. They will explain the assumptions used in modeling the risks. The risk assessments will contain data specific to our upper San Juan River watershed. Steve Wolff (SWCD) and Pete Foster (WWE) will lead the presentation. Craig Dollar of our local Colorado Division of Water Resources will explain the new measurement rules that Colorado water users will follow to document consumption. \nThis free presentation will be held at Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts.  2313 Eagle Dr.

DESCRIPTION: With the official return of spring imminent\, it’s a good time to remind us of the importance of pollinators. To do so\, we are excited to welcome Amy Dolan\, an Endangered Species Conservation Biologist with the Xerces Society\, to our evening meeting on March 19. Dolan is the coordinator for the Mountain States Bumble Bee Atlas in Colorado\, Nevada\, Utah\, and Wyoming. Bumble bees just may be her favorite pollinator\, and she will share with us how awesome they are\, conservation concerns\, and what we can do to help them.\nBumble bees are charismatic\, easily recognizable pollinators thanks to their large size\, loud buzz\, and distinctive color patterns. They play an incredibly important role in sustaining the health of our environment by pollinating flowers in natural and urban areas\, and by contributing to successful harvests on farms. The mountain regions of North America boast some of the highest diversity of bumble bees\, making Colorado a fantastic place to learn about these fuzzy pollinators.\nUnfortunately\, like many other insects and pollinators\, many bumble bee species have been experiencing population declines in past decades. The good news is that there are actions we can take right now to help them!\nCome learn about the unique life cycle and adaptations of these amazing creatures. Hear more about conservation issues and what can be done to help\, including how the Mountain States Bumble Bee Atlas is using citizen scientists to help conserve bumble bees\, one photograph at a time. SUMMARY:American Dipper Project Volunteer Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Weminuche Audubon will be hosting a gathering at the Community United Methodist Church on Lewis Street at 3:00 PM on Wednesday\, March 19\, to highlight our local American Dipper Project where volunteers have been monitoring American Dipper nesting successes since 2021.   Nests have been monitored on the Piedra River\, the East Fork and West Fork of the San Juan River\, and even along the San Juan Riverwalk. New nest discoveries in other locations are always welcome.\nWe are recruiting new volunteers to join us for the 2025 season now. Monitoring here begins in May (or when the appropriate National Forest roads open) and continues through the middle of July as some nests produce two broods each season. Volunteers should be able to drive or walk to the nesting sites and be able to spend 20-30 minutes there watching the nests and observing adult bird activities in the vicinity.The most important observations to obtain are the number of nestlings and when they leave the nest (fledge). No real birding expertise is required\, just good observational skills. Binoculars and a camera aren’t necessary\, but are very helpful. SUMMARY:February Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, February 19\, join us in sharing good news stories about two bird species that have come Back from the Brink in North America. First up\, videographer Darryl Saffer will present his beautiful short film on the limpkin and other wetland waders.  The film has already won 6 international awards. Up until not many years ago this bird of wetlands and swamps was only seen in the US in central and southern Florida. According to an article in National Audubon magazine\, in 2023 limpkins started showing up as far north as Canada and west as Colorado. Find out what has fueled this range and population explosion of a bird which not too long ago was considered for threatened status in Florida.  Throw your hat in the ring to see who will be the first to spot a limpkin in Archuleta County.\nHerb Grover will show his photos of another comeback bird\, the whooping crane\, taken during a recent trip to Texas. DESCRIPTION:The evening meeting on Wednesday\, January 15\, of our Audubon group will feature a presentation by Charlie Tyrrell on a birding trip enjoyed by him and his wife to the Mindo Cloud Forest in Ecuador. We invite you to join us when we trade our bare January trees for a photographic journey to this green and colorful high elevation rainforest.\nThis area of the Andean Forests is often shrouded in low lying mist and clouds which provide permanent moisture to the landscape. DESCRIPTION:Plan to join us on Saturday\, December 14\, for National Audubon’s 125th annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC).  This will mark the 14th year of data contributions from the Pagosa Springs area in the count organized by Weminuche Audubon Society.  Some of our area bird lovers have taken part in all of these local counts.If a major storm cancels the count on the 14th\, we will hold it on the 15th.\nThe Christmas Bird Count is the longest running citizen science census of early winter birds in the Western Hemisphere.  The CBC provides critical data on bird populations which is widely used in predicting trends and in protecting species in declines.  Our count follows established protocols for documenting all birds detected within a 15 mile diameter circle\, divided into 8 zones\, which is centered at the transfer station on Trujillo Rd.\nWe encourage participation by bird enthusiasts of all skill levels to join in the fun. SUMMARY:October Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:If you are interested in learning about native medicinal plants\, we invite you to join us on Wednesday evening\, October 16\, for a presentation by Lake McCullough. On her summer plant walks\, she opens our eyes to the bounty of medicinal and edible plants growing locally. During this presentation she will focus on native medicinal plants that are harvested in autumn. There will be plant samples to look at and details concerning the uses and preparations of these herbs. Included will be recipes to make simple tinctures\, salves and syrups at home. \nMcCullough is a native of Pagosa Springs. She developed an interest in the healing properties of plants at a young age and furthered her education to become certified as an herbalist. Judging from the popularity of her plant walks and presentations\, the home uses of plants is of interest to many in our community. We appreciate her willingness to share her knowledge with us. \nThe public is invited to join us on the 16th for this fun event. We meet at the Community United Methodist Church on Lewis St. Enter through the side door closest to the parking lot or let us know to open the main doors for handicap entry. Enjoy refreshments with us starting at 6 PM prior to a short business meeting at 6:30 preceding the presentation.  \nIn appreciation for our meeting space\, contributions of non-perishable food for the church food bank are collected at our meetings.
