SUMMARY:Public Lands Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special meeting of the Weminuche Audubon Society that will take place at 6:30 pm on Oct 4th in the PLPOA clubhouse on Port Ave.  The speaker will be Walt Dabney\, whose career in the National Park Service and Texas State Parks spans more than 40 years\, including several years in Southeast Utah\, where his responsibilities included Hovenweep NM\, along with the other national parks in that region.  After 30 years with the National Park Service\, Walt finished his career in public lands administration as Director of State Parks for Texas Parks and Wildlife from 1999 to 2010.  He continues to teach new professionals entering into public lands administration through a number of organizations\, including Texas A&M University. \nMany Americans use public lands for recreation and business but don’t understand how those lands came to be in the public domain. Sitting as we do in Pagosa Springs in the midst of National Forest lands\, his talk will surely be of interest to us. SUMMARY:September Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Suitable habitat and past detections suggest that Mexican Spotted Owls could be breeding in remote terrain of the nearby HD Mountains\, but are the birds there? Mexican Spotted Owls are protected under the Endangered Species Act and their numbers are limited by suitable nesting habitat. Their historic range is shrinking as a result of disturbances including timber removal practices\, wildfire and oil and gas development. Can you find a bird who hunts at dusk and at night\, roosts during the day and is most vocal during breeding season when snowfall limits access?\nForming a partnership with San Juan Citizens Alliance and members of the Fort Lewis College Seeds ecology club\, members of Weminuche Audubon set out to answer this question late last winter. Thanks to a grant from Denver Audubon and donations\, Weminuche Audubon was able to purchase Autonomous Recording Units(ARU’s)\, a relatively new technology used to record the unique calls of birds.                                            At the September Weminuche Audubon meeting\, chapter member Kurt Huffman will explain how the ARU’s were used in our Mexican Spotted Owl Project\, how the data captured by ARU’s is analyzed and the exciting possibilities for future use.\nWe will begin the meeting with a presentation by Peyton Jackson\, a Pagosa Springs High School student who was awarded a scholarship from our chapter to attend American Birding Association’s Camp Colorado in July.  This scholarship is made possible by the generous support of Joan Ward in honor of her late husband\, Michael Ward. An anonymous donation made as a memorial for Jody Venard-Beham also supported the scholarship this year.\nJackson has participated with our chapter in Christmas Bird Counts and recently constructed and donated over one hundred nest boxes\, distributed in our area as a part of his Eagle Scout Project. We are excited to find out what he learned at the camp. \n  The public is invited to join us for these presentations at our meeting. DESCRIPTION:Our August meeting will address the question\, where does our water come from?  Most of us turn on a faucet and there it is.  We don’t stop to wonder just how it got there and think about the stops along the way.\nWe are fortunate to have Josh Kurz agree to speak at our August meeting and trace the water that is our lifeblood to its watershed sources.  He has created an easy to understand diagram to help us visualize the journey that water takes to our homes.\nKurz will additionally challenge us to think about the importance of all of the other demands on our local water supply on top of our municipal uses. DESCRIPTION:Join Certified Herbalist\, Lake McCullough\, for a fun and educational ramble through the forest\, as we identify edible and medicinal native plants. The walks are free of charge! Weminuche Audubon Society is proud to partner with Lake in offering these walks. In order to handle increased popularity and demand for information about our local ecosystems\, we will be conducting two back-to-back plant walks at each location. There is a 15-person maximum on each walk. Please call ahead to schedule! \n The August walk will explore wildflowers and medicinal plants of the Continental Divide \nFirst Tour: 9:30 to 11:30 \nSecond Tour: 11:45 to 1:45 \nLate summer herbs\, wildflowers\, and edible plants on the Continental Divide. Meet at the Continental Divide Trail parking lot at the top of Wolf Creek Pass. Take Highway 160 east for about 23 miles from downtown Pagosa\, to the top of Wolf Creek Pass. Parking is on the right side of the highway\, at the Continental Divide Interpretive Sign. Walk is about 2 miles roundtrip. SUMMARY:July Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday evening for a chance to go home with a fantastic door prize.  Win a bee hotel to invite these pollinators into your yard or a beautiful native plant to feed them. \n \n \nThe decline of pollinator species worldwide is of great concern to people who study them and to people aware of their importance to life.  In an article posted to the United States Department of Agriculture website the message is clear.  “Without pollinators\, we don’t eat—it’s simple as that—and\, at the moment\, large numbers of pollinators are dying.” A recent discussion of this topic among Weminuche Audubon board members led us to want to learn what we can do as individuals to support one of these important pollinator types\, bees.  This quest directed us to local bee lover Jen Doane with a request to speak on this subject at our July chapter meeting. \nJenifer is a certified interpretive guide and the early literacy librarian at the Ruby Sisson Memorial Library.  Her love for bees extends to both honey bees and Colorado native bees. When she is not tending her bee hives\, she is often found documenting native bees for the Colorado Native Bee Watch. In Jen’s presentation we will learn about Colorado native bees and their importance for a healthy ecosystem. We’ll discuss various species\, supporting healthy populations\, and building native bee houses. This introductory presentation will spark an interest in bees and provide resources for future research. \nThe public is invited to join us for this exciting presentation at our meeting on Wednesday\, July 19\, at the Community United Methodist Church on Lewis St. Enter through the side door close to the parking lot.  Let us know and we can open the main door for handicap entry.  Arrive at 6:00 PM for snacks and socializing before the meeting starts at 6:30. DESCRIPTION:Join Certified Herbalist\, Lake McCullough\, for a fun and educational ramble through the forest\, as we identify edible and medicinal native plants. The walks are free of charge! Weminuche Audubon Society is proud to partner with Lake in offering these walks. In order to handle increased popularity and demand for information about our local ecosystems\, we will be conducting two back-to-back plant walks at each location. There is a 15-person maximum on each walk. Please call ahead to schedule! \n The July walk will explore native plant diversity on the Piedra River Trail   \nFirst Tour: 9:30 to 11:30 \nSecond Tour: 11:45 to 1:45 \nPeak wildflower season at one of Pagosa’s most popular and scenic hikes! Meet at the Piedra River Trailhead. From Highway 160\, take County Road 600 (Forest Service Road 631) 14.5 miles north to the bridge over the Piedra River. DESCRIPTION:The month of June marks the end of our fiscal year and time for our annual meeting.  Our bylaws dictate that the annual meeting will include a report on the state of the chapter\, a report on our financial condition and elections to the board.  This year board positions with terms expiring are those of Secretary (Lisa Tedder)\, Treasurer (Anne Stevens) and Director (Brenda Breding).  The board is nominating all three of these members for re-election to their current positions.  Nominations from the floor for these positions will also be taken at our meeting\,  All chapter members whose dues are current are able to vote in these elections.\nEqually important is the opportunity to enjoy time together at this meeting.  As has been our tradition\, we will enjoy a potluck dinner.  Please bring a dish to share\, your dinnerware and silver.  We will provide drinks.\nThis meeting will be the chance to renew your membership for the coming year.  We are able to keep our dues at the current $15/year rate.\nThis is also a great time to show your support with the purchase of an attractive Weminuche Audubon tshirt.  Shirts are $22 each\, cash or check.\nWe will meet at the Community United Methodist Church on Lewis St at 5:30 PM on Wednesday\, June 21\, Please note the earlier start time for this meeting. The second tour will begin at 11:45 and go until 1:45.  \nEarly summer herbs\, wildflowers\, and edible plants in the most widespread ecosystem of Pagosa Country! Meet at Turkey Springs Trail System Gate #3\, on Fremont Court. From Highway 160\, take North Pagosa Boulevard north for 5 miles. The road forms a divided\, one-way section. At the point where both sides of North Pagosa Blvd rejoin\, take a sharp left-hand turn\, doubling back on the southbound section of the road for 100 feet before taking the immediate next right at Coronado Circle. Immediately after the intersection\, take the next right on Fremont Court. Please be considerate of private driveways when parking along the road. Walks are about 2 miles roundtrip. SUMMARY:May Chapter Meeting/ Birding by Ear
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever thought about how much the “songscape” adds to our enjoyment of the Pagosa Country landscape? At this month’s Weminuche Audubon Society meeting\,  Keith Bruno\, Southwest Colorado Community Naturalist with Audubon Rockies\, will be hosting a session on “Birding by Ear”.  We’ll explore the varied songs and calls of many familiar local and backyard birds. The purpose of this meeting is to improve everyone’s birding by ear skills\, as well as encourage volunteers to sign up to help with the fifth year of our citizen science project monitoring bird communities in the forests surrounding Pagosa Springs. Please note that our May meeting will be held on Thursday evening instead of our regular Wednesday time.\nOver the past four years\, volunteer observers working with this project have identified more than 80 bird species and counted over 7\,000 birds at four study sites in the ponderosa pine forests around Pagosa Springs. About half of the bird species that we have observed are resident species found year-round in Pagosa Country\, with the other half migrating to our south\, some as far as the southern tip of South America. Moreover\, we’ve also discovered that about 40 of the bird species we’ve observed\, some residents\, but many migrants\, are losing the battle in terms of population numbers. \nThis notable concern makes understanding the linkage between habitat quality and bird community composition — a major focus of our project — even more important. But over and above the conservation goals of our study is the experience project volunteers gain through visiting established monitoring points several times during the six weeks of our sample season\, from late-May to mid-July\, when most of the birds we have studied are building nests and rearing young. In fact\, observing bird species like Warbling Vireos\, House Wrens\, Pygmy Nuthatches\, and Common Nighthawks successfully raise their nestlings is one of the greatest rewards from participation in this citizen science endeavor. \nIf you’d like to participate in our citizen science project this year\, you don’t need to be an\naccomplished birder – helping observers improve their birding skills is a key goal of the project. DESCRIPTION:   Members of the Weminuche Audubon Society invite you to join us on Saturday\, May 13 at 8 AM when we celebrate World Migratory Bird Day by seeing what birds we find at Lake Capote Recreation Area\, located just south of Highway 160 on Highway 151. Lake Capote is owned by the Southern Ute Tribe and a $5 entrance fee is charged.  For information email weminuche.audubon@gmail.com \nWorld Migratory Bird Day\, brings to attention the challenges that birds face on their journeys to and from breeding areas and the need for cooperation across the globe.  Habitat needs must be met not only in breeding areas but also in areas where birds spend their winters.   \nThe theme of this year’s Migratory Bird Day is the importance of water in sustaining bird life.  Drought\, development\, pollution and climate change are some of the stressors that impact this critical resource.  This is a call to action to protect this life-sustaining resource.   \n
