SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:For a quarter of a century the annual Great Backyard Bird Count has been a bright spot for nature lovers. The 25th edition of the event is coming up February 18 through 21. Everyone is invited to join the count so their birds become part of a massive database used by scientists to track changes in bird populations over time. The Great Backyard Bird Count is a joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, National Audubon Society and Birds Canada. \n“Birds tell us how our environment and climate are changing\,” said Chad Wilsey\, chief scientist at the National Audubon Society. “By joining the Great Backyard Bird Count\, participants can contribute valuable data that help scientists better understand our surroundings. Together we can use this information to better protect birds and the places they need.” \nEach participant counts birds for any length of time (but for at least 15 minutes) and reports what they see online. Reports are submitted to https://ebird.org It’s easy for people of all skill levels.\n“Sometimes people feel intimidated about jumping into the world of birds if they have no previous experience\,” said Patrick Nadeau\, president of Birds Canada. “The Great Backyard Bird Count is a wonderful way to get your feet wet\, feel the warmth of the community\, and start to realize the wonders in your own neighborhood. The tools and resources are free. And you are helping birds when you get involved.”Participants enter a new checklist for each new location or time of day during the four-day count. There are also tools and information on the GBBC website to help new and returning birders. You’re also invited to tune in to a special webinar about how to participate in the GBBC. It’s being held February 16 from 2:00 to 3:00 PM Eastern Time. It’s free. Just register to attend the Facebook livestream.

SUMMARY:February Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The in-person meeting at the Methodist Church has been cancelled due to our unpredictable weather conditions.  We will be meeting on Zoom only.  Herb Grover will start us off with a brief discussion of the importance of cavity nesting birds in maintaining healthy forests.  Which of these did we see in Ponderosa forests within our Bird Monitoring Project?\nDue to predictions for a snowy day\, and the concern that there would not be enough time to construct nestboxes and get home safely\, our nestbox elves (Herb Grover\, Joan Rohwer and Keith Bruno) assembled our nestboxes in advance. For a $10 donation to cover the cost of materials\, the boxes will be yours to take home.  Please let us know if you would like to reserve a box weminuche.audubon@gmail.com Our thanks to Matt Ford of Forest Health Timber Products LLC for a generous donation of lumber. \nCharles Martinez will demonstrate how to make an inexpensive hanging birdfeeder using repurposed plastic soda bottles.  Birds love them.\nUse the following link to join us on Zoom. \nTopic: WAS Chapter Meeting\nTime: Feb 23\, 2022 06:00 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://audubon.zoom.us/j/93957483141?pwd=U01FWEJFcVVqV3lOYUM3S0Rkb0xrdz09\n\nMeeting ID: 939 5748 3141\nPasscode: 985710\nOne tap mobile\n+12532158782\,\,93957483141#\,\,\,\,*985710# US (Tacoma)\n+13462487799\,\,93957483141#\,\,\,\,*985710# US (Houston)

SUMMARY:Feeding the Birds - Fuel Reduction Treatments
DESCRIPTION:For the past three years\, volunteers with the Weminuche Audubon Society have participated in a citizen science project to study the response of the bird community in Ponderosa Pine forests to wildland fuel reduction treatments. Retired Professor of Biology\, Ecology\, and Environmental Science Herb Grover will discuss the findings that suggest a rapid recovery in the number of bird species and composition following prescribed fires. \nThis talk is part of the Life-long Learning Series presented by Four Lewis College.  Prior to the webinar\, find the Zoom link on this site;                              .https://www.fortlewis.edu/about-flc/leadership/professional-associates/life-long-learning-series
