SUMMARY:Global Big Day/Migratory Bird Day
DESCRIPTION:Be a part of birding’s biggest team! Global Big Day is an annual celebration of the birds around you. No matter where you are\, join us virtually on 14 May\, help celebrate World Migratory Bird Day\, and share the birds you find with eBird. \nParticipating is easy—you can even be part of Global Big Day from home. If you can spare 5 or 10 minutes\, report your bird observations to eBird online or with our free eBird Mobile app. If you have more time\, submit several checklists of birds throughout the day. You never know what you might spot. Your observations help us better understand global bird populations through products like these animated abundance maps brought to you by eBird Science. \nLast year\, Global Big Day brought birders together virtually from more countries than ever before. More than 51\,000 people from 192 countries submitted 134\,000 checklists with eBird\, setting four new world records for a single day of birding. Will you help us surpass last year’s records? However you choose to participate\, please always put safety first and follow your local guidelines. \nHow to participate\n\nGet an eBird account: eBird is a worldwide bird checklist program used by millions of birders. It’s what allows us to compile everyone’s sightings into a single massive Global Big Day list—while at the same time collecting the data to help scientists better understand birds. Sign up here. It’s 100% free from start to finish.\nWatch birds on 14 May: It’s that simple. You don’t need to be a bird expert or go out all day long\, even 10 minutes of birding from home counts. Global Big Day runs from midnight to midnight in your local time zone. You can report what you find from anywhere in the world.\nEnter what you see and hear in eBird: You can enter your sightings via our website or download the free eBird Mobile app to make submitting lists even easier. Please enter your checklists before 17 May to be included in our initial results announcement.\n\nWatch the sightings roll in: During the day\, follow along with sightings from more than 170 countries in real-time on our Global Big Day page.\n\neBird Trip Reports on Global Big Day\nNEW this year! eBird Trip Reports are a great way to share where you went and the birds you found on Global Big Day. Simply create an eBird Trip Report for 14 May 2022. As you submit lists and upload media throughout the day\, they’ll be added to your report automatically. Send the trip report link to friends and family so they can follow along. (Learn more about eBird Trip Reports)

SUMMARY:May Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:   At this time of year\, birds are singing their signature songs to advertise their presence\, attract a mate and defend nesting territories.  Identifying bird species by what we hear in addition to by what we see will be the topic of our meeting on Wednesday\, May 18 at 6:30 PM.  We will meet at the Community United Methodist Church on Lewis St.  Socializing and setup will take place beginning at 6:00 PM.         Audubon Rockies Community Naturalist\, Keith Bruno\, will lead us in learning the skills of birding by ear.  His lesson will focus on the songs of birds commonly encountered in our Forest Bird Monitoring citizen science project.  The fourth season of this study\, which documents bird species and numbers in selected areas of the National Forest\, will begin at the end of this month. Recognizing birds by what we hear is a valuable skill set in this study and in our bird survey in the HD mountains\,  and one that improves among our volunteers every year.\nAudubon meetings and activities are open to the public and we welcome your participation. We are seeking volunteers for our bird monitoring projects.  For more information and to add your name to the volunteer list\, email us at weminuche.audubon@gmail.com.                                                                                      In appreciation for our meeting place\, we welcome donations of non-perishable food to the Methodist Church food bank. \nThose unable to join in person may use the following link to join us on Zoom. \nTopic: WAS Chapter Meeting — Birding by Ear \nTime: May 18\, 2022 06:30 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://audubon.zoom.us/j/91656494777?pwd=QlJoQ3VucTVtQURjVklvL0FDQk1jdz09\n\nMeeting ID: 916 5649 4777\nPasscode: 043671\nOne tap mobile\n+13462487799\,\,91656494777#\,\,\,\,*043671# US (Houston)\n+16699006833\,\,91656494777#\,\,\,\,*043671# US (San Jose)

SUMMARY:Riverwatch Training with San Juan Mtn School
DESCRIPTION:We’ve been invited by the science teacher at San Juan Mountain School\, Andy Guinn\, to join his class to learn about their RiverWatch monitoring site on Wednesday\, May 25th. The class plans to head down to their nearby sampling site at the river at 1:30pm. Then\, once samples are collected\, we’ll return to the SJMS school (modular buildings on the north side of PSHS’s parking lot) at approximately 2:15pm for the actual water characteristic testing till 3:30pm.  Please RSVP to kbruno@audubon.org\nWe’ve discussed RiverWatch sampling as a chapter. This opportunity will be a great way to learn from the students and support their efforts\, as well as discuss how we can collaborate in the future with information learned about the San Juan River.
