SUMMARY:August Plant Walk With Lake McCullough
DESCRIPTION:Explore Late Summer botanical bounty at high elevation when we look for Edible and Medicinal Plants at Wolf Creek Pass on Saturday\, August 2. Join us for a fun and educational ramble through the forest\, as we discover edible and medicinal native plants. The walks are free of charge! Weminuche Audubon Society and Audubon Rockies are excited to sponsor these summer plant walks with certified herbalist\, Lake McCullough. \nIn order to handle increased popularity and demand for information about our local ecosystems\, we will be conducting two back-to-back plant walks at this location. The first tour will begin at 9:30 and run until 11:30. The second tour will begin at 11:45 and go until 1:45. There is a 15-person maximum on each walk. Please call McCullough ahead to reserve a space at 970-398-0923 and indicate which time slot you choose. McCullough’s knowledge and fun sense of humor have made these walks very popular and spaces fill quickly. We are fortunate that she shares her expertise with us. \nMeet at Forest Service Road 725 (Wolf Creek Road)\, on Wolf Creek Pass. From Pagosa Springs\, take Highway 160 east approximately 22 miles. The right-hand turn is marked with a small brown Forest Service sign reading “Junction Rd. 725.” The road slopes sharply down to the right\, after the turnoff. We will meet at the pullout at the base of the road\, and walk from there. Walk is about 2 miles roundtrip. Please be\nprepared for rocky trails and unpredictable weather\, and leave dogs at home. \nMake sure to visit Lake and Carolyn at Earthsense Herbals for a variety of handcrafted salves\, soaps\, lotions and bodycare items\, as well as medicinal teas and tinctures\, art and more.  They are open from Tuesday through Saturday at 144 Pagosa St. in downtown Pagosa Springs.  You may also shop their online store at https://www.earthsensepagosa.com/

SUMMARY:Four Mile Ranch Trail Days/August 19 and 20
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are needed to help us get our outdoor education site at the beautiful Four Mile Ranch on Snowball Road ready to welcome students in September. These days are open to anyone and everyone interested in assisting. Essentially\, our goals will be to clear brush where needed along trails and in activity areas\, install trail signs\, install a remote toilet and privacy structure\, and unpack activity materials from Keith’s storage unit. Fun fun! As it tends to be warm at that point in August\, my hope would be to start around 8:30 and run till likely 3:30/4 with a break for lunch. Folks are welcome to come and go\, as their schedule allows! Contact Keith Bruno for more information and/or directions to the property. keith.bruno@audubon.org

SUMMARY:August Camp Out Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The August meeting of the Weminuche Audubon Society will be very special – IT’S a CAMPOUT!  We’ve reserved the Blanco River Group Campground for one night – Wednesday\, August 20th. Bring your camper or tent and you are welcome to spend the night.  We are planning a pot-luck meal with lots of storytelling\, and more. We will have some hot dogs\, so bring a dish to share; your place settings; chairs; binoculars for a birding excursion; and if you have a pop-up canopy\, that might be helpful. You don’t need to stay overnight if you don’t want to – you can just drive on down for the meeting and head home when you are full and refreshed. Come when you can – we’ll plan on eating about 6:00 and festivities will proceed accordingly. \nWe’re working on plans for some good old-fashioned campfire singing too but without the fire!  If you have an appropriate instrument\, bring it along.  What kinds of stories will we tell – bird stories\, of course! If it rains\, we just may dance in it. \nTo find the Blanco River Group Campground\, drive South from Pagosa on Highway 84 for about 10 miles.  Cross the Green Bridge (Green Steel Bridge – can’t miss it).  A few hundred yards after crossing the bridge is a Forest Service Road to your left (east) – that’s the Blanco River Road.  Turn there – the campground is about 2.5 miles in at the end of the road. \nThe public is invited to join us for a relaxing time so bring your friends.  We are a welcoming group of people united by a love of nature. Please let us know if we can expect you\, weminuche.audubon@gmail.com.
